MG TD TF 1500 - Blasting Cabinet Water Filter
I never bought an expensive vacuum for my Skat Blast cabinet instead I have always used my craftsman shop vacuum which clogs fairly fast. I was looking at a hot rod website one day and someone had made a water filter for their cabinet out of a 5 gallon bucket. I found a Dust Right separator on sale at Woodworkers Supply and figured it would be easy to modify for the water filter. Here is a picture of the unit and I will follow with a pic of the insides. Well it's upside down but there it is.

So here is the insides. You just attach a pipe to the side that goes in cabinet long enough to reach about 3 inches from the bottom. Fill the bucket with enough water to cover the tube and hook your vacuum to the other side. Notice the white foam disk, that acts as a baffle to prevent water from splashing in the intake. The water splashes up a lot without it. It works great and it's amazing how much sludge is in the bottom after blasting and the good thing is it is not in your filter.

Use a catch bag inside your shop vac, just like your household vacuum cleaner. The mistake a lot of people make is they don't use the bag, so the filter gets clogged. I work part time at Home Depot (where we sell these bags) and when I tell people to use the bags, they are surprised and pleased. Most then buy and use the bags. They often return and tell me that was a great idea. |

LD, I killed by shop vac motor using it on the blaster. Never thought of your idea. Are you saying you attach a regular bag inside the vac before the filter or instead of the filter or what? If you have a picture of this setup I would appreciate seeing it! A lot cheaper than buying a "dedicated blaster vac"! Ed |

Rich, you better turn the top photo over, or all the water will run out! Grin. PJ |

Ed, Yes, of course. The photo is attached. The bag simply snaps on the inside of the canister at the inlet connector, much like a household vacuum. The filter stays in place to protect the motor. The bag collects all the debris and doesn't let it reach the filter or motor. Snap it out to empty and all of the debris goes with the bag with almost nothing to clean out of the canister. ![]() |

PJ, the picture was right side up when I down loaded it. This seems to be an iPad thing, you never know which way they are going to land. Luckily I had just emptied the bucket. The paper filter is a good idea but then again water is free. I might try both. |
