MG TD TF 1500 - Boyer Bransden

I see many years ago a few folk used the EI made by the above.

Are y’all still having great success?

Thanks,

Peter

Nearly all of our Octagon group use Boyer system. It uses the points to to trigger a transistor switch for the coil. Takes all the load off the points, we find smoother tickover and easy starting, so small you can hide it under the 106 control box. If it stops it is only dirt on the point which a cloth removes.
Swapping 2 wires puts the points back in action.
It is cheap and reliable

In the 40+ years, I have had my TD, this is the first I have read about this product.

As they say, you learn something every day.

Peter, post some pictures of your installation and how it works.

Hidden under the indicator/brake light relay not the regulator, brain fade again.
It also has an LED indicating timing so easy to set.

Bruce, these used to called Capacative Discharge Ignition. Basically the points switch the unit and it provides the input to the coil CB contact.

I was using one back in the 70s, we built a bunch of them.

Because the points are not carrying a heavy current there is no burning, gap is not as critical, however to retain the ability to switch back to normal it would be prudent to maintain the points in some semblance of normal. We all do that anyway.

This particular company builds these units for motor cycles also.

Sheesh Peter - thanks for posting. Like others, been driving TD daily plus others on and off for nigh-on 40 years, and didn't know this option existed. Sounds like a good compromise half way between old points/condenser setup and electronic pointless ignition - AND with the freedom to revert to points/condenser if needed.
I plan to investigate with YA and TC in mind also.
Good information!

Gammatronix does one too, about the same price but may ship cheaper.

Actually they do some good things, one is an LED to reflect battery voltage, red, yellow and amber.

Mine has arrived in the USA, should be with me in a few days, but will be a short delay before I can install as I am going to be laid up for a bit.

It might be interesting to install the 5mm three color monitoring unit (https://gammatronixltd.com/epages/bae94c71-c5b6-4572-89a1-e89006e78fbe.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/bae94c71-c5b6-4572-89a1-e89006e78fbe/Products/K) in place of the ignition warning light. Jud

Is the ignition light actually required? I don’t know enough to figure that out.

The 3 color might need a clear lense.

Yes the ignition light is handy. The Gammatronix multicoloured LED is also great, especially if you have fitted an alternator.

Great service by Boyer Bransden, paid on Thursday after the UK had closed, shipped Friday and I have it here in my hands before noon on Wednesday in Buffalo, NY.

Great tracking by Royal Mail and USPS.

Well done, thank you.
