MG TD TF 1500 - Brake adjustment
Replaced all brake components. brakes work wonderfully stopping in reverse but poorly straight ahead. Would that be the front wheel rear cylinder? Or? |

Peter,
The first thing to check is that the front wheel cylinders are not fitted upside down. Easy to check jack both front wheels off the ground, remove the hubcaps and rotate the wheel so as the adjusting hole is towards the front, move the wheel slowly until you see the adjusting screw of the front cylinder, this should be BELOW the wheel cylinder. This should be true for both front wheels. If it is above then you have the brakes fitted upside down. I have assumed that when you refitted the wheel, that you aligned the hole in the wheel to the hole in the drum, if not, then you need to remove the wheel to do this check. John |

If you have had the backplates off, check they are on the correct side of the car, they are stamped L&R If on the wrong side the banjo bolt will be under the track rod arm. It is fun when you get them upside down on only one side. Ray TF 2884 |

Thank you. I do believe I assembled cylinders upside down. The WSM shows right front assembly, and I was working on the left front. Starting over. |

You are not the first, I chased a pull to the left for a while, found RH was ass backwards. Corrected, no pull any more. Peter |

going slightly off topic. It is a problem when WSM's show only one drawing of a part. A friend rebuilt a VW Bug gearbox but the WSM showed the CWP of a transporter without any wording. When he put it in first gear it went backwards, the transporter had a reduction gear at the wheel bearing carrier to lower the axle ratio which reversed the direction. I believe it could also be done in a Lotus Europa Ray TF 2884 |

Picture says a thousand words. This is backwards (bottom) and the correct (top) way round. ![]() ![]() |

I referenced this WSM picture when I started reassembly. I was working on the front left wheel. Did not notice the flex brake tube. Would have been helpful if they included "right front" in the note. I spent many days wondering why I could not get the brakes to work! This post fixed my anxiety. ![]() |
