MG TD TF 1500 - Brake cable
further to the saga with the shockers the hand brake cable appears to be too short.I have had my TF for 46 years so I know everything is in the right place, I even checked they had not put the springs on back to front displacing the axle.
Can anybody tell me the length of the inner cable, from the clevis eye to the end of the adjustment thread. The cable we have will not even enter the handbrake trunnion and even then is as tight as a drumskin. This car has been off the road for over 40 years and we are trying to get it sorted for the owner. Ray TF2884 |

Have the spring stacks been out of the car? The short end of all leaves face forward. |

First thing I checked. I remember this coming up on the BBS a couple of years ago. This car has a new body tub and we keep coming up with problems, but we gradually sort them. Ray |

The original cable which I recently replaced measures exactly 40 inches. |

Oh well that's another problem, the new cable is that length, so something is wrong somewhere.It will not even enter the handbrake trunnion. Ray TF 2884 |

Not a fix. In my rebuilding I tried to keep as much of the original MG as possible. My cables were shredded. I managed to get the old cables out of the ends and open them up. I had SS aircraft cables swaged in. Unfortunately I came up short. I fabricated some Clevis extenders. Later one of my reworked cables pulled out, so I got new ones. The extenders were not used. If you can’t solve your issues I may still have the extenders. If you need I can send them to you. Jim B ![]() |

Thanks Jim, we think it is the tube shock conversion that is changing the run. If all the measurements check out OK I will make up some extenders and also sleeves to extend the outer cable as that is also short. Gives me chance to practice my trade.
