MG TD TF 1500 - Brake light switch; Is there a new reliable one?

The brake light switch on my 1950 MGTD went out recently. It was a Ron Francis Wiring SW 32 and didn’t seem to work for very long. I called up the company and their supplier of the switches stop making them.

I know that Napa makes some suitable low pressure switches. I’m just wondering what is currently being recommended for these switches. I know that a relay can be installed, but I was hoping for a simpler solution. I know a relay isn’t very difficult, but it would be nice if someone could just make a good switch. Please let me know if you’ve had any good experiences with any particular brake light switches. thank you.

I used a relay for some time but that went out too eventually. I switched to LED brake lights with the replacement switch I used with the relay and it has been fine since.

I installed a VW switch from NAPA more than 20 years ago, no problems!

Changed to LED lights. Low current draw and my Moss switch has been good for over 6 years.

Len, it isn't the type of switch, it's the fact that you bought it 20 years ago. Modern switches are not as good. Original Lucas switches were bomb-proof. 20-30 years was a quite normal lifespan. Not anymore.

Every time I find a seemingly reliable switch, the next time I buy one it's gone cheap. I don't know how to keep up with what's good and what isn't anymore.

Oh Boy, Oh Boy, does this ring a bell. Got my TF out after a winter in storage, and the brake lights were stuck ON!

Only two years ago, I had the same problem and I was advised to buy only a Echlin; which I did and I'm no better off.

Back to square One!

When I replaced my switch, I installed one of Dave Ds relays. All the switch does now is power the relay. That was about 9 years ago and I've had no problems with it, works fine. PJ
