MG TD TF 1500 - Brake side to side play
Working on the clutch/brake box. I did not find any front to back play in the shaft and the pedals are firm against the shaft. What I note is the side to side play in the brake pedal. I do see that Moss has a spacer 324-430 https://mossmotors.com/td-tf-brakes So it looks like there should be two spacers? One on either side of the brake pedal. If so, that means I need to pull the shaft out. ![]() |

Oh, I thought you meant side to side at the top of the pedal. Yes you are missing a spacer washer. But still check shaft/bushing play when it is apart, very easy to change pedal bushing. George |

Gook luck with one of the worst jobs on a T Type 😢 |

How much play is to much? Is 1/8" or slightly less OK? And how do you go about taking that sucker apart? Joe |

1/8" inch is ok..... are you sure you want to know the answer to the second question? :-) |

Joe, see http://www.ttalk.info/PedalShaftDelk.htm for even more than you wanted to know. There really shouldn't be any play, but it's your car. How's the clutch pedal? Bud |

Renewing the peddlebox bushings is easy with the tub off Bill Chasser TD-4834 |

Tub is off. Bud it I'd rock solid. No movement at all. This is not my car. I am helping restore it. Actually seem to be leading the charge on this project. Need to look at the spacers. Thanks for the article. |

Bud got it wrong above. Break pedal is solid with no movement. Clutch is sold back to front but has movement left to right. Joe |
JWP Policastro |
Clutch should not have any movement on the shaft as it is held in place with a pinch bolt to the shaft along with a woodruff key. |

Thanks guys. Need to do some detective work. Better now then after the body is on. Joe |

I just read the article on Bud's site. I think based on that information that the shaft I have here for this 50 TD was most likely original and it has no drillings for grease what so ever.

This is how I got at the peddle box on my TF a few years back. I don't have a lift and it is too awkward to work on it on the ground. This set (Canadian manufacture), bolts to the hubs and you just roll it over and now can work on the box standing up. Cheers, Byron. PS: See all the grass in the open garage door? My garage is down a hill on a riverbank. The road is about 20 feet above the garage level. ![]() |
