MG TD TF 1500 - Brand New Steel Wheel Brake Drums

I have been following the thread on disc brakes and noted the availability problem with steel wheel brake drums. I believe the TF ones are the same as ones fitted to the Hindustan Ambassador which only went out of production in India recently. If you Google Hindustan Ambassador and click on images and flick through about twenty photos you will a PIC of an Indian gentleman displaying Hindustan parts including front and rear drums which look very TF.
Any owners located in India out there?

A lot of my brake parts from Moss were made in India, probably by this guy!

Steel? iron is usually considerered the material of choice for brakes, unless you are running off just one or two. And if the part really fits the Ambassador then certainly there is enough volume in India to justify doing them in iron.
The Ambassador may be finally out of production but there must be millions left needing parts.

I once got a TD ring and pinion in 4.55 ratio from Moss and it was made in India. Possibly a standard ratio for the Ambassador?

The copper one in this photo.

Pretty sure the Ambassador is just a rebadged Morris Oxford. Cheers

When I worked for EATON 28 years ago, some of their ring and pinions came from Idia.

I spotted the same thing about the Hindustan Ambassador. It has the same 5 stud arrangement for steel wheels as the TF/TD.

I bought two wheels - supposed to be brand new from the factory. The quality of finish was poor also both had significant radial and lateral run out. Couldn't use them in the end.

By way the holes in the wheels were slightly more round than the TFs and the 'step back' I think that is the technical term for where the hub is in relation to the rim was different than on the TF wheels. Shouldn't make any difference for the hub though.

Since the supplier I used was c$*p so it might be more to do with them. I would not right off the possibility but buy one to test first :-)

I think at one stage the Ambassador was actually re-imported into the UK for a short period. Maybe there were spares brought in then too ?

Hi Guys,

Kyle has a point. Steel is not good for brake drums because it has a poor coefficient of friction. Iron, on the other hand, has a good coefficient of friction. However, I think maybe sometimes the term "steel" is used to mean "not carbon fibre" (Formula 1 commentators when carbon fibre brakes made their debut) or "not iron lined alloy". BTW TCs and Y-Types had steel drums!
