MG TD TF 1500 - breather tube and tappet cover questions 51TD

Whichever PO it was, someone did like tinkering with this car, and used whatever was at hand to fix things. Here is a homemade breather tube, from lightweight aluminum, bent, epoxied and with a stiffener added:

Geoffrey M Baker

Here's how he turned the extra tab on the tappet cover into a support bracket for the tube, and didn't bother with the lower bellhousing bracket:

And then he added this pipe. Oil filler tube? Was he planning to add PCV? I don't know.

Geoffrey M Baker

So, what might that brass elbow be there for?
And what is the tab on the far right side of the tappet cover for? He used it to hold the pipe, but that seems to be non-standard. This is George Butz's picture of his tappet cover, and the tab is not being used.
What was it intended for?

"And then he added this pipe. Oil filler tube? Was he planning to add PCV? I don't know"
Could be for venting the area inside the engine, but there should already be a factory tube on the rocker cover. Or maybe someone put an alloy rocker cover without the vent tube on the engine.

The 'X' series engine was used in numerous other cars built by Morris and Wolseley over the years 1939 through 1955, so there were many things added to the exterior engine to accommodate bits and pieces for all the different cars. You might ask what the two threaded protrusions are for on the original rocker cover - they were for the mounting legs on the TC air cleaner. They are also very good for getting people to ask "what the hell is that for?" Cheers - Dave

I think the tab is used to hold a coil of copper tubing to the gauge on a Y-type that doesn't have the flex line? George

Geoff, refer to the photo of my TD engine posted on your "engine color accents" thread. There is a supercharger oil drain line per installation instructions through the tapped cover. Not exactly in the same place but in the ballpark. Maybe your car had a blower on it at one time.
Jim Merz

Marshall Supercharger drain is the first thing that came to mind on that brass elbow. I've got a couple of tappet covers with similar fittings, having stuck our Marshall-Nordec blower on two different cars.

Rats... Where is that supercharger now???

Geoffrey,
This is my breather tube.
