MG TD TF 1500 - BSPP vs BSPT ?

I need some schooling which isn’t new. I thought BSP stood for British Standard Pipe. Can some one explain these two terms? I’m presuming BSPT stands for British Standard Pipe (T) for Thread. But what is BSPP ??

BSPT is a tapered thread like NPT, whereas BSPP is a parallel thread (British Standard Pararrel Pipe).

Thanks Stuart! Much appreciated!! I think I can remember that. “T” for tapered and “P” for parallel

One more question Please. I’m trying to determine the correct double male adapter for an oil temp gauge to the oilpan in another thread. I know one side will be 1/2”-14 BSPT. I now believe the temp gauge side is likely BSPP (?). To get the correct diameter it it an ID or OD measurement to determine size?

Bill,
To add to the confusion. I translated this from a German Standard website.

At the beginning of the 20th century pipes were sized according to the inner diameter. A 1” pipe had an internal diameter of 1” (25.4mm). Due to the quality of the steel used at the time, this resulted in a pipe outer diameter of ~33mm. The tooling was set up for this diameter. As the quality of steel improved, the wall thickness of the piping could be reduced. The tooling and the fittings were already existing but designed according to the external diameter. The inner diameter of the piping was therefore increased. Modern fittings are defined by the standard DIN EN ISO 228-1 which is metric! For this reason, a pipe with an outer diameter of 33mm is defined as a 1” pipe. The internal pipe diameter is no longer defined by this standard. BSP is now metric.

Declan,
Just to confuse people, BSP may now be listed as metric but the pitch is still Imperial

My Thread Tables charts document has 1/2" - 14tpi BSP threads with an O/D of 0.8250" [5/8"], core 0.7340", effective dia. 0.7793"

Suggest you try a Hydraulic Specialist parts company for the adapter. I recently fitted a new water temp gauge to my Y Tourer and ended up going to a local parts company to get a 1/2” BSPT x 1/8” NFTF adapter to fit the sender unit. My top engine outlet had a 1/2" BSPT plug inserted which I replaced with the adapter to take the sender unit (1/8" NFTF).

cheers

While we are on the topic of threads and temp gauges. TF owners be aware that although the threads in the thermostat housing look the same they are not. The heater outtake is BSPT and the thermometer one is NPT and have different pitches and OD's
