MG TD TF 1500 - Carb banjo bolt washer #17

The fiber washers provided constantly leak unless extremely tightened and then over a period of time start to leak again.

Has anyone found a better solution???

I have tried silicone - but it is too soft and creeks too much

I am now trying PTFE and it is harder and seems to hold up for now - but will it last

Any Ideas - do not want gas dripping on exhaust.

Michael. I have not had that issue. I wonder if a little locktite Blue would keep the bolt tight.

Another option might be a Dowty washer.
Bruce Cunha

If it's the washer that crushes and leaks and not the banjo bolt that loosens, use annealed copper washers instead. Also, be sure the recessed side of the banjo faces away from the float bowl with a copper washer on both sides of the banjo.

Hi,
I had the same issue. The problem was almost solved when I realized that the axis of the bolt should be perpendicular to both faces of the banjo and the mating surface of the carb. This is a tricky condition.
Check for this and try to improve this geometry. But for larger tolerance we should find adequate washers. The softer the better.

Sounds like a problem that we tackled a few years ago. It had to do with the diameter of the inside of the machined section of the #19 Banjo. The #17 washer didn't match this section. It was slightly too large. I caught this with some washers from Abingdon Spares. I'll try an archive hunt. Bud

Yes indeed the #17 is a bit too big that is why I went to the local gasket maker and he custom cut me some reinforced Buna N washers 16.5mm x 22.5mm x 1mm

The accuracy was just a bit off and it would have been better to ask for 22.0mm

However Buna N is a bit soft so while the creep is much less then regular non reinforced it still creeps a bit. Meanwhile the leak has stopped - will it hold ?

I would be best to find a gasket material that is between the hardness of reinforced Buna-N and PTFE so it doe snot creep but holds well in place.

Any suggestions?

UPDATE:
On another website one of the wise gentleman recommended using Dowty washers and buy an assortment on Amazon.

I got an assortment today and installed them on the fuel line to the Carbs. Not only did they seal tight around the 16 mm banjo bolt but also fit very well in the fitting and take up any misalignment or mating surface irregularities.

The best part was that they did not have to be tightened with great force - but just enough to seal and a little extra.

These are great for any hydraulic application without having to worry about stripping out threads.

I recommend them highly

Michael, could you please give me the info for that Amazon order. Thanks, budkrueger@comcast.net.
Bud Krueger

In the UK milk is sold in whitish plastic bottles. I have replaced many of the old, red fibre washers, and gaskets, with ones made from these bottles and have never had any problems.

Please give me the info for that Amazon order as well.

Why not just buy the correct ones from the manufacturer, sucarb.co.uk

Gentlmen:

I have always learned a lot from all of you and it gives me great pleasure to share this DOWTY washer solution that I came across somewhere in all these pages. This is great - absolutely the best solution that puts no stress on the Aluminum. I thank whoever deserves the credit for proposing this.

Of course you need to have a clean surface. Then put a drop of oil on the inside rubber face of the 16mm Dowty and a drop on the threads --- then screw on the washer and push it flat against the head once it is on the smooth shank. The rubber is very tight on the inside of the washer and this compressive action with the steel outside retainment is what forces the rubber into all the crevices. Assemble on banjo and screw on a second washer with oil and after it is reasonably tight - screw it into the Aluminum Bowl cap. You just have to be reasonably tight. Now no stress on the threads.

The best $25.00 I ever spent!!!!!

Thanks Michael. Looks like a great value.

You can probably get the 16mm Dowty on ebay in packs of 10 for about $11.00 but for and extra $10 I got a large assortment

I had the same problem with new washers after I changed the fuel lines. Quite a dangerous thing. I was told the need to be soaked before mounting.
It took 3 iterations to get them tight, and they seem to dry out after long breaks, but fortunately the problem has gone away by now.
But thanks for the tip with the dowty washers, that sounds like a much better solution.
Merry Christmas

I use Dowty washers on 2 to 3000 lb hydraulic fittings and they don't leak. When I need to change a fitting I don't re-use them, I put a new one on. PJ

Exactly
And why fight fiber washers - just to be original - but expose to fire - seems very risky/
I am absolutely sold on Dowty washers and the MG community should recognize this as a Safety First feature!
Michael Balahutrak

Are dowty washers fuel proof? I see “pneumatic and hydraulic “ in the description, but no mention of fuel

As long as they are fool proof, it should be ok ;-)
