MG TD TF 1500 - carb/manifold spacers
Hi, Just sorting a few odd jobs on the MG and I am puzzled as to why each of the carbs on my TF1500 have two spacers behind them. The spares book list only one for each carb. However if I was to use only one the studs would be too long. The car spent much of its life in Queensland Australia so maybe someone put in longer studs so they could use two spacers, maybe to cut down heat transference from the manifold ( vb hot in Queensland!) what do you think? I don't think they can be the correct spacers as I think the carbs would foul the side panel. Ray TF 2884 |

I'll try and get a photo tomorrow to show you how it all looks. Paul |

I used the phenolic spacers from ASL, had to flatten them to remove molding marks. The studs were a shade too long so I added a flat washer and a spring washer to prevent air leakage which allowed for a whistle where it leaked. I got good gaskets from a Mini specialist in California, the paper ones are crap. Soaked the gaskets in oil before installing. Seal is now perfect. Peter |

Picture of manifold showing one stud with one spacer and the other with two. The spacers are 5mm thick and the studs measure 39mm from the manifold. There is very little space between the from Vokes filter and the bonnet side. Thanks Paul ![]() |

Paul, My TF-1500 had the same double insulator as yours when I bought it. Appears to be a fiber material. You can see the two insulators for the front carb. Paint covers the joint on the rear carb. Total thickness is about the same as a single phenolic/plastic insulator sold by most MG suppliers. (The 22952 head has been replaced with the correct AEF118 head.) Lonnie TF7211 ![]() ![]() |

I recently had the carburetors on my TF 1500 rebuilt. In removing the carburetors I discovered someone had used some kind of sealing material between the flange of one carburetor and the fiber spacer. That spacer was damaged in trying to remove the sealer. Neither Abingdon Spares nor Moss had the fiber spacers, but sell the phenolic ones which are the thickness of two fiber spacers. I wish I could have found a new fiber spacer to replace the damaged one, but I replaced the fiber spacers with phenolic spacers on both carburetors.
