MG TD TF 1500 - carb vent tubes

i always get info from this site but rarely feel like i contribute. So maybe this will help someone else.
my vent tubes were cut off even with the float chambers like a lot of cars i have seen. after reading some posts on the possible fire hazard i decided to do something about mine. since my car is together it makes the job a little more challenging. here is how i did it.
first i cut about 3' of 12/2 house wire. i stripped off the sheathing and used just the wire. i bent these wires to fit where i wanted the tubes to go and used them as a template to bend my tubes. the wire allows for you to try a bend and then straighten it back out if you want to change it. after i had the wire bent for both carbs i started with the tubing i bought from Moss.
first bend at the cap was really easy but then the tube gets a lot stiffer.
So i filled the tubes full of salt and taped off both ends to keep it in. you can still kink the tube if you try to bend it too quick so take your time. i held it to my wire templates with some tape as i made each bend. this way i bent at the angle and direction i wanted. surprisingly it went in pretty nicely.
of course when i got in there i wanted to clean the filters and then found one of my floats was taking on gas. it never fails you always find a couple of other things to do when you start something.

i am not quite done as i am waiting for the float. but i have the tubes in place now so that i could secure them at the bottom.

TLW: Good suggestion on using the wire as a template.

Instead of filling the tubes with sand you can also insert wire there too so the tube does not collapse. A bit easier than the sand technique and not as messy.

the wire also helps with figuring out how to get the back tube under the linkage and thru everything to line up. i got to practice how to turn it so it would go in. a little bit of a chore with everything still attached.

the tubes are only 30" so not quite as long as my wire. i should probably have angled it more instead of squaring off to give me more line where it turns down at the frame. but it will certainly do the job as is.

What's that big polished aluminum thing you have to clear that looks bolted to the engine bracket/stabilizer?
Christopher Couper

Overflow for the radiator.
