MG TD TF 1500 - Carburetor jet seals

I couldn't stop my front carby jet stem seal from leaking. I put in new cork seals on different occasions, soaking them in oil etc. and they still leaked. I went to a bearing supply company and they manufactured overnight teflon seals. I installed them and they are great. No more leaks.

Hi John. I tried off the shelf teflon seals but I either had leaks or the bearing was very had to move. I bought the Super Dry Jet Bearing Kit from Burlen and it solved all my problems (well, with the carbs anyway). Moss has them as well 370-396

Same for me, I couldn’t get Teflon seals to work either, so fitted the Burlen Super Dry kit and now no leaks.

Teflon seals are notoriously fragile, prone to cuts from any sharp edges. When I installed Teflon seals, I first insured that the jet was absolutely smooth, with no gouges on the jet. the cross holes in the jets have to have the hole edges relieved. Also, Teflon seals are much smaller than the cork or rubber 'O' and it is best to install two Teflon 'O' rings in each position. I have not have any problems with the jet seals since installing Teflon seals nearly 20 years ago. Cheers - Dave

Dave, I actually followed your advice when installing the teflon seals (several times in fact). But for some reason the jet bearings were very difficult to move and I eventually had leaks. I tried them with different bearings but still the same problem. Must be your Magic touch. The Super Dry Jet Bearing kit worked the first time I installed it and is still leak free and freely moving. Perhaps the fact the John had them made up while mine were off the shelf could be a factor.

I put the super dry kit on my single carbed TF and while it does not leak, I have to open the bonnet and manually work the choke now....Long term??? we'll see.

I have the same issue LaVerne.
I can put the choke on but I must open the hood and manually push them up.

Just as.a matter of interest, did you use the complete kit, including the various associated brass parts? I only ask because replacing just the seals with the new Super Dry seals won’t work. Made that mistake myself, first time around.

I made two mistakes: not soaking the cork seals in oil long enough, and not seeing a squashed seal at the bottom of the jet assembly. Seems like polishing the jet from time to time is also useful.
