MG TD TF 1500 - Carburettor gland seals
After trying on three occasions to stop the fuel leaking from the jet seals on the front carburetor I decided enough was enough and that I would give teflon seals ago. My problems are now over with perfect sealing. I used -010 Teflon "O"rings in lieu of the traditional cork seals and -210 nitrile "O"ring in the large jet screw.
Cost $1.80 for each teflon "O"ring and about $1.00 for the nitrile "O" ring. Total cost $4.60. The rear carburetor is not leaking and it has cork "O"rings however should it ever need the seals replacing I will use teflon. At this stage I am totally satisfied however I guess time will tell. I used the Moss "leak Free" replacement 365-420 $0.89. They do not leak BUT, after pulling out the choke (enrichment) to start, the jets don not return properly. I must open the bonnet and manually return them to the seated position. Jim B. |

Jim, Is your spring strong enough? You may need to change it to a stronger spring. John |

I had thought of that but I am at a loss as to where to find a stronger one. Jim B |

You local hardware store may be able to help you or a motor spare parts store. |

I worked my way through cork, fiber and teflon seals with hit and miss success. I finally bit the bullet and bought the Burlen H Type 'Superdry' Jet Bearing Seal Kit Part # WZX 1775. Pricy but no leaks and the jets move easily in the bearings. No affiliation with Burlen, just a happy customer. Tim TD26711 |

Jim B, Just a thought. If you can replace the twisted Bowden cable for the choke with solid Piano wire it will push the jets back up and you won't have to open the bonnet. As a working alternative I used solder on the last 6 odd inches of the Bowden cable to make it stiff and that works too. Also check all the pivot point on the carbs. Oval holes or worn pins can cause a lot of slop you don't need. Rod |

Jim B, I had the same problem. I got new springs from Joe Curto and polished the jet and other brass surfaces. I also re-soaked the cork seals in oil (I had cheated on that). I think my fatal error was leaving an extra seal at the bottom of one of the jet assemblies - somehow I didn't see it when I rebuilt the carb. Seems to work fine now, but the jets do get some varnish when they sit for a while. Jim |
