MG TD TF 1500 - Carpet Glue
What brand / type of glue do you recommend to glue the carpet to the padding in my TF? Use the same glue for the carpeted strip that is glued to the heel board below the side curtain box and for the piece that is glued to the prop shaft tunnel? (New Moss carpet) How much open time do I have to adjust the position of the carpet onto the padding? Suggestion of where to buy the glue? Any suggestions to get the best results? Thanks, Lonnie TF7211 |

I use ORIGIONAL Weldwood contact cement in a can. Three coats. Allow 15 minutes between coats. (Solvent not water based). Twenty minutes on the last coat. There is NO working time. You touch it and it's stuck. I tried spray stuff in a can without much luck. You need several coats since the carpet is rough. I only used it on the foot rest. All other carpet is either just laid in or just tacked around the edges. You may (will!) need to remove it to get to the clutch or gear box. |

3M spray contact adhesive, not sure of the exact name, buy at big box store, or auto paint jobber, worked well for me. |

PS- It is a contact type cement. Follow directions, spray on both pieces, let dry to the touch (it dries really fast if warm/dry weather) then stick together. It can't be repositioned, so line everything up right the first time. |

I use Weldwood in a can also. I buy a handful of cheap 99 cent brushes and trash them after. I tried the spray and didn't get as good results as the brush on Weldwood. Yes, make sure you have everything located where you want it, once they touch, there's no wiggle room! Make sure the two surfaces are dry to the touch. PJ |

The method I used. Lay the carpet on what you are going to glue it to. Use some spring clamps on one edge to keep it from shifting. Fold back half exposing the underside. Spread the glue. Let glue dry to tacky. Roll the carpet back down. (Lift the carpet to a 90 degree angle and starting at the fold line touch the carpet to the padding) Then fold the unglued side over and glue it. The heavier the fabric the more spring clamps. Weldwood works best on heavy fabrics with a rough surface, spray glue works best for light weight smooth fabrics. If you use spray, cover anything and everything you don't want glue on, over spay is hard to clean up. |

Thanks (as always), guys - I'm off to buy a quart of Weldwood contact cement. G D - Thanks for the tip to apply glue to half of the carpet piece, secure in place, then glue the other half. I'm following Chris Couper's carpet instructions. http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/mgtd/mgtd_carpet.htm Lonnie TF7211 |

I don't know why you would want to glue the carpet down? Mine are just laid in over the soundproof material. I have had to pull out the carpet several times. I just stapled it down where it needed it and the seats hold down the rest. JMHO. |

I don't plan to glue the carpet/padding to the floorboards or gearbox cover. Chris Couper's site says to lay the padding in place (no glue), then glue the carpet to the padding. The combined carpet and padding can be removed because the combo is not glued to anything. Carpet without padding will be glued to the heelboard behind the seats and to the propshaft cover. I'm not planning to add foil backed insulation to the gearbox cover, firewall, or floors. I'm installing the floorboards now. Plan to start carpeting tomorrow, so this is my last chance to make changes to my plan. Did I read Chris' instructions incorrectly? Any better suggestions? Lonnie TF7211 |

I am also of the "no~glue" school. On 2 or 3 occasions so far I got caught in rain so heavy I was glad i did and pulled the carpet out the next day to dry out. |
