MG TD TF 1500 - Carpet question
My front driver's side carpet is in ruins, although the rest of the carpet is fine. Can anyone point me to a local alternative cheap source for a small piece of carpet replacement? I don't want to have to buy a complete set from Moss to replace one part. I can easily cut out to match, just wondering what available carpeting is a reasonable substitute for the original. Color black... |

I should add that from what I can see, none of the carpeting is original. It has no trim on the edges, no snaps; it's just black carpeting cut to fit and tacked down. Some day I will buy the complete kit... but not today. I just want a replacement piece. I think I'll go down to the local carpet store and see if I can get a piece of the same thickness and color.. |

Geoffrey: I think you can get extra carpet from Moss too and not just the kits |

To match the original as closely as possible get the CHEAPEST stuff you can - even loop pile is too fancy! No edging, nothing. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Try a auto upolistry shop. Auto carpet is much thiner then house carpet. You might also try a auto wrecking yard. (Pick and Pull) |

I thought that TD carpet was originally not edged except for the piece around the handbrake. Chris? Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Peter, TF and TD Karvel ('hedgerows') black carpets originally were very similar with no edging except over the handbrake piece. On TFs,the rear vertical carpet piece has interior colour piping where it meets the rear wheel arch cover. Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Athos"),TF9177("Aramis"). |

Rob is correct. |

Interesting. So the kits that Moss sells are not really good reproductions? Or do people accept that the carpeting kits which have trimmed edges and snap points are "acceptable" to install? |

When I was in a similar situation, I found some automotive carpet stock on eBay. |

Moss TD kits are not edge trimmed except for the parking brake cover and the vertical rear carpet. However TD s didn't have carpet behind the seat or boot area that I'm aware of. Moss includes this in their kits because apparently people wanted to trim this area as well. I found the Moss carpet to work very well on my recent installation. Check Chris Couper's Original MGTD site for proper installation Bill Chasser jr TD4834 |

Hi Geoff., Basically anything is "acceptable" on any part of our cars we own. Each owner will have different degrees of involvement in the quest for originality. Some really enjoy chasing the fine Factory detail, others just want their cars to go faster, with others modifying bits and pieces on their cars to suit their individual driving pleasure. I personally like seeing the original fittings and fits associated with the cars as they exited Abingdon, yes I know, not everyone's 'cup of tea'! The original Karvel carpet on TDs and TFs seemed to wear out pretty quickly. I do have new Karvel in the TFs,however for only the Driver's side front of seat area, use a modern material carpet piece. If the car is at a Show, this piece is temporarily replaced with the Karvel which matches the rest of the car. In this way,the carpet never looks worn! Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |
