MG TD TF 1500 - Chassis Clip Questions - TF

I am replacing clips into my TF-1500 chassis that I removed when I had it blasted and painted. Even though I photographed everything, will you please answer some questions?

> The first question:
In this photo of the inside of the right chassis rail, do clips go into the holes marked with the orange spots and question marks? If so, are the openings "large" or "small?" And is each clip open on the top or bottom? There were no clips in these holes when I stripped the chassis.

Thanks,
Lonnie

No second question … I answered it after I sent the first message.

On the TD Lonnie they are for the fuel line (should be the same on the TF) so the openings are those that suit. Beware the legs of the clips! They should be offset so that they will easily slide past each other when being inserted, but many aren't and so will break when being fitted, as the spring steel is very brittle. Someone recently was posting on a source of better made and cheaper clips. Avoid the Moss stuff. Expensive and really badly made. Cheers

Lonnie,

The extra holes might need to be included in the recent thread, "Items that Make No Sense on the TD/TF".

The location of your installed fuel line clips along the bottom of the frame look correct.

Thanks Peter and Frank,

Frank - You're right. I couldn't find any photos of lines, harness, or clips in those locations. There is one hole in a similar position on the left chassis rail that also has no clip. Paul Probst's excellent diagram on Chris Couper's Original MGTF Midget site doesn't show clips in the holes.

Peter - As Frank noted, I don't believe that they are for fuel line.

I broke three or four clips when I removed them. I didn't break any when I replaced them, including five or six reproduction clips. I didn't find the reproductions overly brittle. They are very hard, but I was able to bend them a little when needed.

You are correct that some of the legs on reproduction clips are not offset to cross over each other when being inserted into a hole in the chassis. I was able to bend the legs to insert them.

I had two types of reproduction clips -- one had a tighter hook for the line than the other. Some of them came from Moss, #326-326. Not sure where I bought the others, perhaps at a classic truck supplier when I had my '54 pickup.

Thanks to both of you for your fast responses.

I must have misread your post Lonnie. The only thing that is fitted on that rail is the fuel line. Cheers

I haven't seen one in person, but would not a RHD car use those clip holes to secure the brake line?
L E D LaVerne

No LaVerne. The brake line runs down the left hand rail along with the rear harness. Cheers

This is a TF so maybe they changed the chassis but didn't TD's have two sets of holes for fuel lines (Mk II)?

Tom Lange would know for sure. :-)
Christopher Couper

There you go!! Most likely I assume.

Here is a link to the ones I posted previously. Darn near a perfect match, and as you can see. The price is a lot less than Moss.

This fella has been putting up videos of his TD rebuild on our local club website
This one shows the brakeline down the lhs

You might be able to look through some of his others for info-I believe his car was fairly original when he started

After the vid it should flick over to episode #1 - 2 - etc.

Lonnie,

If originality is your thing, then this isn't for you. But if safety is, then read on ...

I have always felt that brake lines should be properly secured. Here in Quebec, race cars are required to have Adel Clamps on all brake lines. Just seems to make sense. I'm installing them on my PA (restoration).
