MG TD TF 1500 - Chrome part quality
Hi I recently bought a pair of TF hood side strips. They are Chinese repros, supplied by Moss. While the chrome plate looked good, the quality of the metal fabrication was terrible. Fully of waves and ripples. I will probably return, but I wonder if they all look like this. Last year, I bought Moss supplied TF grill slats. They were very nice and straight and seemed well made. I expected the same. Anyone else out there have recent experience with Moss supplied chrome/metal parts? Do Moss and Abingdon Spares get their chrome from the same place? My other option is to rechrome the originals. That is unattractive, given the length, shipping, and the difficulty finding chromers in the West. It took me a year to get the radiator surround done! We have the same problem here in Ireland Tom in relation to getting original pieces rechromed and like you as a stop gap I have bought a number of chrome pieces from Moss. So far I have bought bumpers grill slats and some door handles and covers. Although in each case they all seam lighter than the originals I havnt yet had a problem. In the long run I do plan to get the originals rechromed but to get my TF on the road and looking good I have resorted to buying certain pieces. My advice would be to send them back explain the problem. I do find them helpful. Good luck. |

I purchased this same part from Moss last year and returned them. I probably could have lived with the quality, but, unfortunately, they did not look like the originals. I remember when Moss worked hard to "duplicate the original" many years ago, but I think the T-Series business has dwindled significantly. Especially items unique to the TF. This is not a criticism of Moss, I am grateful they remain in the T-Series business. Thank goodness for them and Abingdon Spares. Solution seem to be having originals rechromed unless Abingdon Spares has better. Good Luck, John |

Tom, I don't know where in Oregon you are, but Cruisin' Classic Chrome in Salem replated a number of parts on my MGA. I was very happy with their work/turnaround time and would recommend them in a heartbeat. Best of Luck Larry |

I have every part I buy rechromed. The commercial plating these days is terrible. |

I have had most of my parts re-chromed. As long as they were in good shape. The cover over the inner door latches was an exception but I purchased those 30 years ago. To control costs, I make a list of the replacement costs, show it to the chromer and tell him that that's what I need to pay (or less). They usually agree. Jim B. |

Tom, My side strips are supposed to be shipped out today or tomorrow, I'll let you know what they look like. I had no choice but to buy new as my car had none when I bought it. Not knowing at the time just how hard they were to get used, I thought I'd buy a used set and have them re chromed and found out shortly that wasn't much of an option. We'll see when they come. PJ |
