MG TD TF 1500 - Cluster gear end play?

Rebuilding the transmission of my TD while the engine is out. Good think I had a second transmission for parts.

Have come up with a problem. There is .025 in. end play clearance in the cluster gear after assembly, with new thrust washers installed. The thrust washer plate was well worn, and the one in the other transmission "looked" much better.

I was wondering if any one would have a new one waiting to be installed, and could mic the thickness of the plate. I can't seem to find any info on this piece. It is Moss #441-210.

If anyone can do this for me, would be greatly appreciated, or if someone has used another method to get the clearance of the end float to spec.

Thanks....CR

CR, I have bought cluster gear plates and washers from MOSS and Abingdon over the years. They all varied in material, dimensions and machining quality. I seldom came up with a combination of new and used parts that came close to the .004" to .006" end float desired. In the past years, I have used .010" steel shims between the front plate and the bronze thrust washer purchased from McMaster Carr. However, Mr. Bob Grunau

http://www.ttalk.info/Grunau.htm sells some thicker thrust washers available to solve the end play problem.

Thanks Richard. I know Bob, and he is not too far from here. I was actually thinking of using 2 front thrust washers to get the required end float. But I like your idea of using a steel shim.

In a document of Bob Grunau I found:

Temporarily fit the laygear into the casing by using the original layshaft. Check the end-float with feeler gauge. It should ideally be about 0,002" but unfortunatly it is not adjustabel.

Who is right with the end-float or do I misunderstand?

The Cluster gear end float clearance is not called out by any MG factory books I have seen. Moss probably has original manufacturing drawings which might define the original thicknesses. Unfortunately they haven't shared those with me even though I have paid my dues with them in transmission thrust washers.

I trust Bob Grunau because his recommendations are based on actual hands on experience and he has helped me get out of transmission trouble a couple of times over the years. Bye the way, I have seen the .025" end float with a dial indicator myself with worn parts.

Recommend you review his recommendation for thrust washers here: http://www.ttalk.info/Grunau.htm

I must appologize - it is a document by Barrie Jones (MGCC TT-Register TD/TD as presented at the 'T'-Register seminar) and not Bob Grunau.

Thank you Richard - with that source and your experience 0,002" seems to be wrong.
