MG TD TF 1500 - Clutch Lubricant
I'm just about ready to install my NOS clutch that I've owned for 40 years, in my TF. I've cleaned it up, but there is no lubricant anywhere on any of the moving parts. Should there be some? If so, what should I be applying? Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |

Some oil on the pivot busing in the end of the crankshaft and the bushing at either end of the throw out shaft. Some grease (small amount) on the splines of the first motion shaft. Cheers - Dave |

I assume you are also replacing the pilot bushing? They wear oval, and affect shifting. Soak it in oil before you install it. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

I wouldn't put any grease on the input shaft splines for the risk of it flinging onto the the clutch plate or flywheel. Look the splines over carefully for wear slide the disk on and and off to insure it moves smoothly. If it doesn't address the issue at hand. But I have always mated them dry. Bill Chasser TD-4834 |

Thanks Dave - Appreciated advice. Do you think I should use fibre grease? Lithium? Tom - of course. Like my clutch which I've had for 40 years, I also have some spare spigot bushes. A new one for sure; but I must admit that I forgot about soaking it in oil first. Ta. Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |

Probably the lithium grease. As for not greasing the splines, I just got through putting a new clutch in our MGB and the clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing came as a set with a packet of grease and instructions to use the grease on the first motion shaft splines. As for soaking the pilot bearing, I am always forgetting that it should have a 24 hour soak before installing. I found a way to circumvent the 24 hour soak. It involves placing the bushing on your thumb, one open end on the thumb, fill the bushing with oil until the oil is brimming over the top. place your other thumb on the top of the bushing and push your thumbs together until the oil starts oozing through the sides of the bushing and you will have finished a 24 hour soak in less than a minute. Cheers - Dave |

What about a dry lubricant? Graphite, Moly, Teflon - I have all 3. Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |

I wouldn't use any dry lubricant Gord as I would have doubts that in would stay where it was intended. Only coat the input spline just ever so lightly with grease. Slide on the clutch plate and remove it and wipe away any grease pooled up on the clutch opening and the input shaft. You need just a trace. Any pooling will be spun outward and risk contaminating the friction surface. |
