MG TD TF 1500 - Clutch Return Spring - Tips?

Any tips to make installing a clutch return spring on my TF a little easier?

I installed one about ten years ago when I was younger, stronger, and more agile. Not so today.

Thanks,

Anyway, it's a hint on how to bend the clutch return spring to keep from losing it. Bud

Thanks Bud,

My problem is how to stretch the spring to secure it into the front clip or into the lever.

Lonnie your problem is a spring is much too strong, due to some or most suppliers not caring about the design or quality of their replacement parts!

I recall going to the parts store, buying a generic one and making it fit. It only needs to be strong enough to pull the linkage and pedal back. See you next weekend! George

Thanks guys. For now, I’m gonna reuse the mystery clutch return spring that was on the car when Jo Ann bought it last year.

No time to buy a better one or to use the new one that I have.

Got the engine running today, just in time to drive it to GOF-South in Gainesville on Thursday.

New engine control bar, motor mount, water pump, thermostat, hoses, engine paint, details, and a penny under the bypass spring of the oil pump. Whew!

Still need to adjust side panels to fit the bonnet, attach the bumper, and do a lot of detailing to remove a month’s worth of greasy finger prints.

I finally got around to attaching the new clutch return spring to the bracket on the sump.

I attached the "L" shaped back of the spring to the clutch lever with the open end of the front hook facing the sump.

I moved the adjusting nut to the end of the clutch rod so that the clutch lever could rotate forward to reduce the distance needed to stretch the spring.

Then I attached a piece of small decorative chain onto the front hook of the spring. Ran the chain over the front cross member and out the front of the car. I pulled the chain with one hand and guided the hook on the spring into the eye of the bracket with the other hand. I cut the link of chain that was trapped by the hook.

Would be an easy job for two people: one to pull the chain and the other to guide the hook into the eye.
