MG TD TF 1500 - cooling system bottleneck
Some may call it nit picking and others' jaws may drop but there's a couple of spots that choke off the water circulation more than anywhere else. "So what, it still does the job" you might say. If you've cruised the highways at 230F, you too might pull out all the stops. The passage from the water pump to the water passage on the side of the block, and the passage exit up to the head are rough, small orifices. image below is the front pump discharge into the passage. please forgive the pics' poor focus, as "close up" doesn't have flash and is too long of an exposure to hold steady enough. ![]() |

rear passage.. I'm going to hog more out of here, and maybe smooth out the front a bit more, too. Gotta pick out all of the nits! I can see why some racers went with a remote pump and feed to the rear of the head. ![]() |

Nice! Look forward to seeing it all smoothed out. I'll have to look at doing this before my machine shop puts the core plugs in... |

They originally looked like caves lined with stalagmite and stalagtites. |

I picked up the block from the machinist today, and followed Jim's procedure. I opened up both the front and back passages, by quite an amount, using a rotary burr and then hand files. Lastly, I drilled the small front hole in the block as per other threads and very slightly enlarged the back one. The result, I hope, will be an engine running in top shape when I get it reassembled! Thanks for the tip Jim! Now I'm off to return the block - parts should come today or tomorrow and he can get started. He's already shaved the flywheel as per Bob Grunau's directions. |
