MG TD TF 1500 - Correct mode for wing nut bolt gear box cover
I'd found the cover for the gear box tunnel and the matching wingnut from ebay. In the gear box tunnel is no bolt - only a hole. Was it welded or screwed? |

cover should have hole to allow threaded stud, then cover held in place with wing nut. I am currently 150 miles from my TD so this is from memory, Also I believe we glued carpet over the plate, made starting the wing nut interesting and painful to the thumbs. |

All right - but how is the threaded stud (dimensions?) fixed? I don't want to remove the gearbox and would be glad not to have remove the tunnel too. A picture would help so much. Does the cover lay on the carpet of the tunnel or is there an overall cut out for the cover (more equal with a piece of carpet glued on it)? |

If this helps Bela. This is the tunnel from my RHD 53 TD my Stud seems to be welded to the small plate which is then spot welded to the cover on the inside. (Sorry it is covered in paint) You would need to remove the tunnel to do this I think. Rod ![]() |

Also, on mine the carpet covered the tunnel and was "not fixed". There was a layer of 3/8 felt? Some of which you can see in the pic above - where it was stuck on with contact adhesive - in places. The hole for gear box dip stick access was a single oval in the carpet to match the dimensions of the metal holes. The small cover was also covered with carpet (glued on) and when secured, sealed the hole and helped to hold the carpet on the tunnel in place. I removed mine as I now have a 5 speed box from Steve Neal at Skyhook Engineering. Rod |

Thank you - now I have an idea of a the solution. |

Bella; Don't Chintz on the stud length. I have not been able to get the standard wing nut to grab the factory stud. I had to make a nut with a nib that extends through the cover hole to grab the stud. I do have an extra layer of foam under the cover as well as a carpet, and a carpet on top. I keep hoping that with time the layers will compress enough to allow the nut to take up. An additional 1/4" would have been nice. ![]() |

Also a helpful picture - thank you. |

Mine came broken off. I JB welded a new bolt from inside the cover. Just had to cut it off for my new 5-speed though. I also had a wire on the dipstick to the top after dropping it in that hole! |
