MG TD TF 1500 - Crane Cam

XPEG with Crane cam,(stock lift), Crane push rods and with setting of .016 intake and .018 exhaust, the valve train runs pretty quiet, Just seems quieter than I think it should be. Should I leave it alone or open them up another thousands? The engine runs smooth as silk! PJ

If it works, don't fix it. Those clearance figures sound about right.

If Crane have made the cam and quoted them settings then they are the settings to run--they would have built the quietening ramps on the lobes to suit the quoted valve clearance
One thing of interest though is most camshaft manufacturers quote the clearance as a running clearance (Not meaning running but at running temp)
So unless stated otherwise clearance needs to be set with the engine hot (running temp.)
If you want to do them cold, run the engine till hot ,get no4 rocking--set no1 clearances spot on to the quoted 16-18 and then leave it till it's dead cold then measure what the cold result is
Then you have a cold clearance spec to save burning yourself doing them hot

PJ Crane does not supply a stock lift cam.
Set the lash to zero and measure the valve lift with a dial indicator on the retainer.
The lift for the stock blue printed Crane Cam is .357" intake and exhaust valve lash .018" intake .020" exhaust.
The lift for their performance 340-0010 is .430" intake .441" exhaust valve lash .016" intake ..018" exhaust. ( As the recommended Compression ratio of this cam is 9.0: 1 to 10,75: 1 the block must be fly cut for exhaust valve to block clearance for an XPAG & most XPEG engines)
I stock Crane Cams cataloged and ones not cataloged for T type engines!

Len, Let me look up the cam number on the receipt and I'll get back, I'm sure you can tell me just what I have, as I was told it replaces the stock cam configuration, Thanks. PJ

Len, the number of my cam is 340-0002. Mild road? I was given the specs as .016 intake and .018 exhaust, does that sound correct? PJ

PJ, see http://www.ttalk.info/Camshafts.htm for comparison of stock OEM cam and the 340-0002. I've had that cam in Lazarus for a bunch of years. Bought it when Crane was still Crane. Bud

PJ, see http://www.ttalk.info/Camshafts.htm for comparison of stock OEM cam and the 340-0002. I've had one in Lazarus for a good while. Since Crane was Crane. I had to use their short pushrods since I took .100" off of the head. I'm quite pleased with it. Bud

Thanks Bud, much appreciated! The chart gives a max rpm of 4500, I've had this engine to 5000 and possibly the reason I bent two push-rods. PJ
