MG TD TF 1500 - Cross-threaded tach drive
My tach drive is cross-threaded where it connects to the cable. Looking for suggestions to remedy the problem. Thanks for your help, Lonnie TF7211 TF681 ![]() ![]() |

Ahh who's been a naughty boy then--- A thread file would fix that up quick smart, just start on the undamaged section and chase the thread out, it'll come back nicely. Or, in the lathe and spin that first damaged thread off leaving a straight guide spigot section to start the nut straight.---I'd be going the thread file. |

Agreed, thread file. You just need one with the correct TPI and preferably also thread angle. |

Where do I get the thread file? I tried a very thin triangular file --- no success. Lonnie TF7211 TF681 |

If you have a thread gauge find a steel nut with the same pitch, it does not even have to be the same diameter. Cut it in half, lightly clamp the 2 halves around the thread and use it as a die former to tease the metal back. Ray TF2884 |

Lonnie- Eba# but don't take any notice of postage, that's to Aust. This is an imperial thread one, you can get metric pitch as well but usually if the thread count is close you can use the imperial one for a cleanup job like that Maybe your local garage/machine shop would lend you one for a one off little job- https://www.ebay.com/itm/295040273122?hash=item44b1c54ae2:g:eE8AAOSwUGNiqjzq |

Thanks guys,
I try to learn something new every day. You fulfilled my quota for today. Looks like the thread pitch is 26 TPI. Some Brass, Cycle, and BSF fasteners have 26 TPI. Close, buy no cigar: Some French Metric and Fine Metric are 25.4 TPI. Some gas brass pipe threads are 27 TPI. The closest British Standard Pipe thread is 28 TPI. I'll order a thread file from British Tool & Fastener this weekend. Maybe a Whitworth thread gauge, too. https://britishfasteners.com/british-whitworth-thread-file-7596.html https://britishfasteners.com/thread-gauge-whitworth-7595.html I'll have to practice before attacking the tach drive. The pot metal cuts very easily! Lonnie TF7211 TF681 |

"I'll have to practice before attacking the tach drive. The pot metal cuts very easily!" Especially upside down, backwards and at a weird angle, or in the blind. :-) |

You'll be fine, just find a spot where the thread is fairly good and just work your way around from there. I find the best method is to hold the file and just use your pointer finger along the top of the file just above where you're filing so you can use your finger to just control how much or little pressure you're putting on the file---if that makes sense - |

An update on the tach drive threads: The thread file did the trick. The cable now attaches to the drive. Thanks for your help. Lonnie TF7211 TF681 ![]() ![]() |
