MG TD TF 1500 - Dash harness
good Morning,
I'm working on a plan to work on the dash harness. My Idea is to separate the dash harness from the main harness and couple both with one or more plugs. First I worked out a drawing with all the different colors of the wires use so fare. I understand that the brown colored wires witch are going to the Ammeter and the other one going to the Lighting & Ignition switch are heavier than all the other ones. The big one are fused with 35amp, what size of wire I should use? By the way I prefer to use braided cable, which is more authentic, I know the main element the Plug is fore sure not authentic. Anyway, my questions now: Did anybody make the job and can help with details? Recommendations on wire size? Which type of Plug System should I use? A supplier source where I can get braided wire in small lengs? I need: Brown/Blue 25amp or more? Red 25amp or more? Blue/White 16amp or 8amp Blue/Red 16amp or 8 amp Brown 25amp or more? Brown/white 25amp or more? Green 16amp or 8amp Green/Black 16amp or 8amp Yellow 16amp or 8amp Thank you for any help and recommendations ![]() |

Guenter, I did the same about four or five weeks ago. I used the dash harness from B&G which is a bit of a joke and expensive. The brown wires in the correct gauge with the correct tracer colours were not available. I had to compromise. I still have some wire left over if you need some. I think I used 6mm˛ for the brown wires but I would have to check. Regards Declan ![]() |

Thank you Declan, this is exactly wat I want to know. You use a lot of single plugs but I wish to use Plugs where I can cluster the wire together. I found a source for the required wires in the internet the vintagecarparts.co.uk, unfortunately they have a minimum length of 10 Meter each. ![]() |

Guenter, The problem with clustering is there are several thick wires and several thin ones. I chose to do the thick wires on a point to point basis and the thinner wires can be grouped. Regards Declan |

This is my solution. The harness is cut behind the dash and wired up to a twenty pin plug. No additional wiring is needed. Cheers Peter TD 5801 ![]() |

There is an eBay vendor who sells a pre-made harness. Not cheap. About $35. I used his. It did a nice job. I used the standard MG ball ferrules and sleeves to act as joiners. Not as convenient as Peters but, I feel, more in keeping with the period of the TD. I did add waxed harness lacing to keep things a bit neater. Jim B. ![]() |
