MG TD TF 1500 - Datson 5 Speed
Can anyone confirm for me the model number of the Datsun 5 speed transmission supplies by Steve Neal back in the day.
I seem to have a stripped speedo drive gear [which I believe is plastic] - when my speedo correction box locked up. It has been fine for about 4 months. But on Thursday I drove up to Orlando on the interstate and sustained driving at and around 70 mph seems to have ceased it solid. I am hopeing that the drive pinion gear for the transmission is still available - as it must fail being the week link in the chain. Appreciate any help. Rod |

This is from an email I received from Steve Neal in 2010. Mort FS, FL, FA. and you'll get the correct transmission. steve neal skyhook114@comcast.net |

Thanks Mort, Does that equate to a Datsun 210FS or FL or FA? Rod |

Rod - if you can't find one and it's a stock Datsun part, I have a parts transmission from which I can pull one. If it's a modified Steve Neal part, I don't know. You want a tranmission from a Datsun 210 (NOT B210), which has the letters FS, FL or FA stamnped on the case. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Well Tom it is in the TD currently so where do I find the letters stamped?
As far as I know Steve only modded the bell housing onto a stock 210 tranny. Internals should all be the same. I had to have a small gearbox made to get the speedo to be accurate and after installing one of Dave's 4.3 axel needed to have another one made to correct for that. It is that is what ceased and broke the tranny gear. I will be getting into it tomorrow and removing the floor boards to get at the tranny. Also have a new water pump to install as that started to make a funny noise just befor going to the GOF [go figure] but it held up ok for the 300 mile+ trip. Even thrashing it down the interstate. Rod the input shaft is shortened as well as modifying the gear stick, the rear mount and the release for the clutch. Make sure the cable hasn't sheared before you get to deep into it. The stamping is on the top of the thick center plate...impossible to see unless you remove the cover. ![]() |

:) Thanks LaVerne, All good info
Here is the Pinion Assy. I took out This is for the 5 speed Steve Neal gearbox only [210 Datsun] as that is what I have. This plastic/Nylon gear has to be pretty rugged as the cable is the thing that broke when the correction gearbox ceased. I took the pinion out to just make sure it was not damaged. The only number on it is "108" and the gear is green and has 16 teeth. IF there are any other numbers or diamentions needed - let me know before I put it back in. Rod ![]() |

Where did you get the correction box Rod? Maybe I better have a look at mine. |

I measured the unit as best I could with an electronic caliper - Numbers may be a little too accurate .... LOL This is what I found. I have asked some suppliers on EBay if they stock this unit - as it is possibly made of Unobtainium. So far no replies. BTW The number on the unit could be 801 ?? Rod ![]() |

Rod, That sounds like it was my corrector gearbox that seized. Have you removed it? Is it seized solid? Can you see any signs of damage when you remove the side covers? I would be interested to find out why? Regards Declan |

Hi Declan You have mail. I have not tried to open the corrector box. It is absolutely solid? No movement at all. Do you want me to return it to you for your expert eyes to look at it? Rod |
Rod Jones |
Rod, I haven't received any mail as yet. Did this happen suddenly or did it deteriorate over time? Check the cost of posting it back to me and I will of course refund all costs. I have no idea what could have gone wrong. It could only be a bent shaft. I tried seizing the gears by test running a prototype dry for six weeks and the gears were still perfect. A repair free of charge is not an issue. I'm sorry that this problem occured. Regards Declan |

Declan, I forwarded the mail again. Did you get it? Rod |

Got it, I will get back to you in the morning Regards Declan |

Rod,
I read through you mails. Very difficult to state the cause at this stage whether it was gearbox or cable related. The main thing is that the drive end in your Datsun box is not damaged. I would also check the speedo just to be sure that is OK too. Pop the gearbox in the post to me and I will have it back to you by return post. I will make up a new input and output shaft in the meantime. I would think it is the input shaft as that is the weakest part of the gearbox. Try and source a new Datsun cable. It would obviously be better if you could get a cable Datsun/MG square drive(thread M12x1mm). Regards Declan |
