MG TD TF 1500 - Differential Stampings

Cleaned the paint off the differential today. On the driver side tube is a 5 on one side and 4413 towards the middle. This is on TD 4139.

On the differential case is an 8 over 41

Shows the diff. ratio of 5.125.

Makes sense Don. If correct, it would give a way of telling what ratio a car with an unmolested Diff has.

You can’t be sure without checking - by rotating the input flange and counting the number of turns of one wheel flange with the other held fixed (then dividing by two).

Am I looking at this photo wrong? The fill plug appears to be on the left side facing forward, my TF is on the right side facing forward.

Bruce. I've never seen the ratio stamped in that location. They are stamped on the left side tube about three inches from the inner casting. I always re-stamp the new ratio on the tube on the ones that I change the ratio in.

Probably a serial number.

That is interesting any pictures/numbers from older cars than 4139?

I checked it again. My tube has 5 4413 on the right tube facing to the front of the car. So that number is 274 off my ID. I would think that is well within what would be expected on the assembly line.

8 over 41 is on the back top of the case.
