MG TD TF 1500 - Disassembling Parking Brake Handle

How do you remove the small chrome button on the top of the parking brake handle?

Also, some pieces fell out of the handle when I unscrewed the black grab. They look like a valve keeper, so I am assuming they are a part of the locking mechanism. Anyone have a picture of an intact one?
Bruce Cunha

It just unscrews. It's brass and the rod is mild steel. Note that although they look almost identical, from memory the thread on one end is 2BA and at the other it's 5/16" BSF! I have these details buried in my archive somewhere. The rods are almost always heavily corroded (which might explain your difficulty) but can be easily made from mild steel, with the correct threads created at each end using a button die. I also had the bush turned up in Acetal and I still have about a dozen of these left ($10 AU, including postage to anywhere in the world). These bushes are unobtainum - they aren't available from any of the usual suppliers. Cheers

What do you need a picture of Bruce? The handle and the button went out for plating but everything else is out in the shop in a bag.

Hope this helps.

I see that AS has a nylon busing. Is that the same as your Acetal Peter? Go ahead and ship me one Peter. Drop me a bill and I will get it out to you. cunhab52 at gmail dot com.

I did get the rod out. Wrapped a piece of rubber around the button so as not to scratch it and put a vicegrip around it. Came out of the base first and then out of the button. Rod was actually not all that corroded. Just a little gray discoloration.

Thanks.

I also note that there is a replacement lower pin available so you can take the lower parts off the chrome handle. Did this so it is ready for the chromer.

OK Bruce I'll send you one next week. The bush looks to be exactly the same as the one shown in Frank's pic above, except it's made from black Acetyl. Mine were made using an original as a template. Cheers
