MG TD TF 1500 - Distributor Bolt Issue
The distributor that was in my TD was a 9/48 dated unit. I found one that is close to my build date and ran into an issue.
The bolt that holds the distributor clamp on, also has a pin on the end that keeps the distributor from moving up and down. Well, the bolt end is larger than the slot on the distributor. I thought I may have grabbed the wrong bolt, so I went through my spares and found the one from my blown engine. They are exactly the same. I can lathe the end of the bolt so it fits in the groove, but I am unsure why it is not the rigth size? DIstributor is marked DKY4A 40162A DA 37 8-50. It was fully rebuilt by Advance Distributors. Here is the issue. ![]() |

That is not a dizzy clamp bolt - it is a camshaft bearing location bolt. The dizzy clamp bolt has a larger head - next size up in BSW from the camshaft bolts. Tony The Classic Workshop |

Tony is correct, that is a cam bearing lock bolt. . My original clamp to block bolt also has a screwdriver slot in it. There is a recent lengthy and meandering thread about the required spacer to hold the clamp in a passive position up off of the block somewhere. Find and read that too. George |

THanks all. Can someone post a picture of the correct bolt? This was in a bag marked distributor, so I am thinking it has been wrong for some time. It screws into the clamp hole and protrudes into the distributor opening. Did the original have a pin on the end or does it even touch the distributor. George. I have the spacer. |

Good morning, I was close, but the pinch bolt has the slotted head. The clamp to block bolt is only drilled for lockwire. Not sure if washer is original, very possibly correct. Not the one under the pinch bolt obviously. Yes I know no ground strap. George

Ok, so I looked through all my spares and have not found that yet. Looks like the difference is the shoulder. Thats a lot for a single bolt. I see Moss has them at 34.99. Anyone have one they want to sell? |

Another reason to never throw out old parts. I found the correct bolt in my misc carb parts box. Would normally not look in that box, but I was looking for a keeper pin for the carbs and fount the distributor clamp bolt ![]() |
