MG TD TF 1500 - Does Copper Naphthenate corrode metal?
I'm going to treat old and new wood on my TF with solvent based Copper-Green Wood Preservative that contains 10% Copper Naphthenate. No warnings are given about possible corrosion on metal in contact with wood treated with the product.
http://greenproductsco.net/wood-preservatives However, the Safety Data Sheet of a similar water based product, Woodlife Coppercoat Green, with Copper Naphthenate and Monoethanolamine warns: CONDITIONS TO AVOID: Avoid contact with metals. INCOMPATIBILITY: Product slowly corrodes copper, aluminum, zinc, and galvanized surfaces. Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents, strong acids and strong alkalies. http://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/wolman/woodlife-coppercoat Safety Data Sheet: http://www.rustoleum.com/MSDS/ENGLISH/1901A.pdf > Does Copper Naphthenate corrode metal? > Do you suggest any better preservatives? > Do I even need to apply a preservative? Thanks for your help, Lonnie TF7211 |

From the data available, there is a small risk of corrosion or erosion if the adjacent metal surface has been primed. It appears that the advice is precautionary, to prevent come back if it is used in unpredictable situations and then there is some damage done. http://nisuscorp.com/images/uploads/CuNap_Corrosivity_Data.pdf In fact a good hardwood does not need preservative if it does not get and stay wet for prolonged periods. Hope this helps. |

I'm not sure that treating Ash with copper naphthenate by brushing or even dipping will do a lot of good as its a hardwood, its not very rot resistant though. I think its better just to paint it to provide a moisture resisting coating, which is what I did. Dave H |

I am not sure the ash would really need any treatment, the only wood on my TF that needed replacement after all those decades since it was new were the two pieces at the rear of the tub. That said, on those replacement pieces I did use a few coats of boiled linseed oil -wiping off the excess after each coat once it sinks in. JB |

Among other pieces, I also replaced the two pieces on the rear of the tub, which I coated with two coats of thin Marine varnish after curing I sprayed them with primer and they got painted at the paint shop. Will they last another 60 years, not my worry! PJ |

Hi Lonnie,
I can't answer your question but the best I can do is offer what I used to treat the wood to my TF. I was happy with the results. Be sure to apply in a well ventilated area. I used Rot Doctor CPES https://www.rotdoctor.com/products/cpes.html. If you read the QnA section, there are questions if this product is safe for metal contact. It is. Another option for wood treatment is to use a waterproofing membrane such as is used in bathrooms prior to tiling. I used a water based membrane on both sides of the floor and the sub dash when I made them, prior to painting them satin black. Obviously no incompatibility issues. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Thanks Frank, I saw your post on the BBS about RotDoctor when I was searching the archives for info about preservatives. Wood preservative is probably a moot point. I'm on my fourth day of trying to fit a new hinge pillar. At this rate, I'll never drive the car in the rain or shine! Lonnie TF7211 |
