MG TD TF 1500 - Door Check

Has anyone had a problem with the short leg of the door check being too short to properly fasten? I can get the rubber washer and washer on the shaft, but can barely get one of the two nuts threaded. I could countersink the shoulder of the short leg, but that would limit the range that the door would open, would it not? Any thoughts?

Some suppliers have parts that are not an exact match for the original. I ordered just the wedges, for example, and found they wouldn't fit into the lock mechanism. I note now that that supplier states that you need to both halves if you are replacing the locks. It's likely that there are other issues with these parts such as you have experienced.

I may be miss-understanding you post, but you seem to say you have the rubber on the short side of the check. I believe it goes on the long side as I show in the picture.

I also seem to remember that mine had locking nuts, not double nuts.

As Lew noted there may be more than one design. Mine were purchased from AS in 1984. When I when to install them 30 years later, I found they were different than the (broken) originals. The long arm had a bend, the originals were straight. However they fit just fine.

I found other pictures showing that as well. Have switched them around.

I am a bit confused. What am I looking at in the picture. That is, I cant figure out landmarks on where the stop is.

The door is not hung.
No hinges.
The check is in the rear pillar.

There is a thread on this on the other board somewhere. Seems some had the short stub slightly bent when it comes out of the hinge pillar, and others had the long part with a slight bend. If not it would rub and bind in the door hole. Jim, good pick up on the rubber placement . George
