MG TD TF 1500 - Door Lock Designs
We all know there are many poorly designed components on a T Series but surely the door locks take the biscuit. The plates that the lock and wedge are fitted to have loose captive nuts that allow a little adjustment and the holes for the screws are similarly bigger than the screw diameter. However the lock and wedge plate have two wood screws that fit into the body and door wood work. Once these are in there is no further adjustment unless you plug the screwholes. Fine for a first time set up but what about subsequent adjustment? Jan T |

Somebody needs to produce a comprehensive set of installation/restoration instructions covering the points raised & the modifications suggested on the other thread. Plugging screw holes runs a pretty poor second to virgin timber. There are three areas that need to be addressed; the lock, the striker & the hinges. Each presents its own set of installation & alignment problems. But I guess expecting the door to shut with a clunk is probably asking too much! Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

I have just reread my thread and the situation is even worse than I had suggested. If you fine tune the settings without the wood screws, when you actually do screw these in they pull the lock and wedge plate flatter to the body / pillar. You need to guess what effect this will have! Jan T |

I have a new left side latch assembly and a fairly new right side assembly. Even when lined up perfectly, the latch pins wouldn't drop all the way in the wedge hole. Possibly the chrome inside the hole was just enough to make it too tight. I enlarged the holes by 1/32" and now the pins drop in with no effort. My doors now close with a clunk, latches fully engaged. PJ |

Gives me something to shoot for PJ. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Looks like I had better get the door frames (with locks) fitting correctly before putting the metal skin on the doors and fitting the quarter panels. |
