MG TD TF 1500 - Dumb Iron Hole and Number

Sand blasting my frame and came across the number 86 stamped next to a hole in the right dumb iron. I also wondered what the holes are for (there is a identical hole in the left dumb iron, but no number stamped next to it.

I visited a friend who has 4 TD's none of his have these holes. I posted on the other TD site and got a response from another person with a 53 TD that he has the same holes.

My TD is 4139.

Not sure why, but when I upload the photo, it flips it. It should read 86

I don't have the fenders here right now, but as I remember, the holes go through the fenders also.

While I do not have the additional holes on TD 1250, I did find a series of numbers on the right dumb iron this morning. They do not match up with anything else on the car or the build date which was April 6 1950. I'm stumped.

TD3042 also has some odd numbers on the right hand dumb iron. However, the left hand dumb iron is stamped with the chassis number on the outside edge.

Here is an example of the chassis number on the left hand dumb iron.

The chassis is on a rotisserie, hence the attachment on the end of the dumb iron.

So far, I have only one other member reporting the same holes in his Dumb Iron. I note in Clausager that an option foe the TD was a tow bar. I am assuming this was a trailer hitch for towing something behind the TD as he lists a max weight, but is it also possible there was a tow bar for the front of the TD so it could be towed? Where these holes are, that would be a spot to bolt in a tow bar system.
