MG TD TF 1500 - Dumb question I am sure... cotter pin in the sump?
Why is there a large cotter pin at the base of the sump area under the flywheel? |

It is to help the oil escape form the bell housing. Kind of a tickler. Rod |

The cotter pin is simply there to keep the hole in the bottom of the bell housing open, and not plugged with dirt and oil. The pin will wiggle and jiggle as the engine runs. This hole needs to be kept open to drain the oil that is flung from the screw at the ear of the engine. Yet another extremely simple solution found on our cars. David |

Thanks, guys. I suspected it was to allow for oil to escape, but wondered why the cotter pin at all, why not leave it open? This explains it! |

Geof, Some have fabricated a small container with a drain that bolts underneath that hole to catch the oil. I just put a cute stainless baking sheet on the garage floor since there's more than 1 drip. |

grow bag trays are good, they are quite cheap and 3 or so foot long. |
