MG TD TF 1500 - Dumlop race tires?
Does any one know a source for the Dunlop vintage race tires 5.60 x15 in the US? Regards Bill Chasser jr TD4834 |

Bill, Coker sells 550-16s, but not in a Dunlop brand. I don't think they sell Dunlops of any size. They sell race tires, but not sure of the sizes. PJ |

Hah. Should have posted this last year. I bought a set (about $700) and sent them back because it was not street legal and really did not look like street tires. They may still have them. Hi Bill, I run Hoosier (made in USA) 5.00 by 15 tyres on my TC in Historic Racing in Australia. They are also available in 5.50 by 15. I am interested to learn if you regard them as an option and why you are after the Dunlops. Do the Dunlops have better grip? ...... If so, perhaps I should be chasing them too! Bob Schapel |

Hi Bob. No I don't have a preference yet as this will be my first set of track tires. I have a set of 50 year old Parelli's that still have their stickers on them. They having no checking and have been inside and dry stored for that length of time. Great for a static display but I wouldn't want to run them for any spirited driving. When I was at the vintage races in Sonoma last year, the Dunlops seemed to be what I saw most on the T Series race cars. I didn't realize other manufacturers were involved with suitable tires for our cars. Paul, Laverne and Christopher Thank you for the sources I will investigate further. Christopher, given the current price listed for the dunlops on the sascosports site your $700 was a heck of a deal. Sorry I missed yours before you sent them back. Christoper. Please Email me with your phone # I lost it when my last phone died. I would like to chat with you a bit. Salsburyrocketman at yahoo dot com. Thanks Cheers Bill Chasser jr TD4834 |

Hi Bill, Have included a photo. Are you running the tyres on a TD? The "Vintage TD" is a cool coincidence! The photo is of a 5.00 by 15. The Hoosier 5.50 by 15 is wider and has an extra row of tread but is the exact same height / rolling radius. These are the tyres most of the Australian historic racers use. They have the 70% aspect ratio which is required by our rules. I will send another photo on another post because I haven't worked out how to send two on the one post. Bob Schapel ![]() |

What's your opinion of the Hoosiers? |
W. A. Chasser Jr |
Longstone Tyres in the UK still sells Dunlop tires that fit TD/TF if you can afford them. They have a website. Blockley tyres in the UK also sells vintage racing tires that will fit. |
D.C. MacNamee |
According to Longstone Tyres: The MG TD was equipped originally with 5.50x15. If you would like to fit a radial tyre a 165x15 is the best option. As the 5.50x15 tyre is not available we would recommend the 165x15 Michelin XZX or the Michelin XAS. |

The Hoosiers are better, that is what most racers use. |
Len Fanelli |
Yes, Hoosiers seem to be good. However, I can not compare them with Dunlops or any of the others mentioned because Hoosiers are the only race tyres I have used. Before Hoosiers I ran road tyres .... Yokohama 321 (185 by 15) on the rear and Pirelli (165 by 15) on the front. In Australia Hoosiers cost us about $250 AUD each but I think Dunlops are a lot more expensive. Has anyone out there tried both Hoosiers and Dunlops? Bob Schapel |

The earlier soft compound Dunlops were the best from my sources, but they have not been available for some time. |

Bill Assuming you are racing your MG you should check with your sanctioning organization to determine their tire rules before spending any money. The availability of Dunlop L-Series racing tires has been spotty. Last year were not available due to a problem at the factory. (They "lost" their lease!) To determine current availability call Dave Handy at Sasco Sports. The advantage of the Dunlop L-Series is their vintage feel. They are very communicative (about breaking loose) so they are easy to slide around corners, vintage style. (Disadvantage is high cost.) I have not used Hoosiers but my impression is that they may have more traction and may shave a second off your lap times. Mark Sherman |

Mark, Thank you for your comments. Your correct in stating that I should look more to the sanctioning body for input. The Dunlops seemed to be the tire that stood out when I was at Sears Point. Sascosports list the Dunlops at nearly $400 a pop. Wondering if that is because of supply and demand or if that is just what they are costing out at. I have not called yet for availability. This is something I will have to make a decision on in the next few weeks as the car is very close to being roadworthy. Bob, Dave, Christopher, Len, DC and Mark, thank you all for you expertise and comments. Regards ' Bill Chasser jr TD4834 |
