MG TD TF 1500 - dyna-beads

These were mentioned in a recent thread so I looked them up. Like many, I have the infamous shimmy between 55 and 65 mph. My tires and wheels were balanced about 6 years ago (maybe 3,000 miles but my odometer is only recently working so I really have no idea). The balancing was done off the car using the center hole. I understand that TD wheels are mounting-hole centered and that using the center hole is not reliable but that was the only option at the tire dealer.

Anyway, has anyone tried dyna-beads? Did they help?

Thanks.

Don't know about the magic beads. Instead ...

> Google: "Tire Shaving South Carolina" (or a nearby state)

Find a shop that can shave your tires while they are on the car to make them round. And also make sure that the shop can spin balance your newly shaved tires while the wheel/tire is on the car. You're right, "Hub Centric" shaving and balancing do not work for T-Series disc wheels because the center hole is not necessarily in the center of the wheel. The wheel must be mounted "Lug Centric." Some shops shave tires with the wheel bolted in a separate machine ... most of these machines cannot mount the wheel "Lug Centric" - not good.

Be prepared to drive a ways because there aren't many shops with the vintage equipment needed to do the job.

My TF with disc wheels had a vibration around 50+ MPH. One of the front drums/hubs is badly out of balance. So balancing off of the car did nothing. The tires were out-of-round from the manufacturer and from being bounced because they were out of balanced. The wheels were out-of-round wheels from 60 years of curbs and potholes.

A local shop had the equipment and the result was amazing. The rear wheels/tires must be moved to the front to shave and balance. Mounted the rear tires on my "good" front hub for shaving and balancing.

See the process in this video. Shaving in first part of video. Spin balancing in the second part.

It may have been my post you saw. There are lots of videos out there on these things and people are kind of divided on them. I'm not crazy about the idea but they do seem to have cured some people's problems, especially on old banged up wheels like you often find on these cars. There are also reports that they are hard on the inside of inner tubes so that's worth considering. Bottom line is, if they work then they work. And they may work for one application and not another. I have no personal experience with them though.

Shave tires, balance and true wire wheels, he actually tunes the spokes. PJ

Thanks. Hendrix did the wire wheels on my MGB and it's smooth as glass. They're about 200 miles away so a visit is not in the near future. Damn a bunch os viruses!

Any one know whether this is available in the UK?
JK Mazgaj

Plenty on Amazon, which I assume would have a UK outlet.

I have the beads in a work truck tires.
They work but not as good as an actually spin balance.
The truck tires are to large for spin balancing so the beads are the only option.
Every once in a while the tires are way out of balance, I apply moderate hard braking the beads redistribute and the tires are better.

Any decent tyre place should have lug mounting plates for their off car spin up balancer
