MG TD TF 1500 - Dynamo

Does this look right or should the brass sleeve be further down the threads? It's tight now (with a little play in the shaft). I would hate to put tool marks on the brass unless necessary.

Hard to tell-it does look pretty far out. The collar inside has to be tightly held between the coupler nut (sleeve) and the dynamo end. I would remove the gearbox and the rest of the stuff and just try with the coupler nut and collar. BTW, that looks like a very rare original coupler nut with the knurled pattern, rather than the repro vertical striations. George

Bill - George has a good suggestion regarding the distance the collar will screw down on the threads of the dynamo. It needs to go on far enough that the gear box will not flop around on the end of the dynamo. You may find that you will need to put a fiber washer inside the collar to take up all of the slack.

The biggest problem with the gearbox moving, is that it can swing far enough to contact the primary connection on the distributor, causing the engine to cut out while driving. The ideal fix for that is to rotate the distributor far enough one way or the other to insure that the tach gearbox will not come into contact with the primary post on the distributor as it is nearly impossible to get the gearbox collar tight enough to avoid the gearbox hitting the post on the distributor. Thanks, I believe it is the original. I will try the recommendations and report back.

I found part of the problem with movement of the box DaveD mentions also can be tightened up with some attention to the bronze squeeze clamp (behind or to right of sleeve). It looks like yours is like mine was, and screwed together about as tight as it can go to tighten the squeeze. I took it all apart and carefully opened up the clamp and added a few little strips of shim stock between that clamp and the shaft it clamps around.

I just changed mine out. The screw in the squeeze clamp had sheared off at some point in time. This is how far mine screwed in. I had to play around to make sure the key was properly engaged in the slot.

I just added a tin strip to hold the gearbox in place. But then again, I do have my distributer in a 180 degree position.
