MG TD TF 1500 - Dynamo oiler

Any one successfully replaced what I assume is a "felt pad" in the T series dynamo oiler. Nearly £40 seems an unnecessarily high cost if all that needs replacing is the felt.

I made my own out of a piece of 1/4 inch felt, works fine. The felt has to be stiff or it will collapse. PJ

I bought my felt oiler from Abington Spares, but now the brass fixture must be purchased with the felt. Ouch.

Some owners have purchased felt cord from McMaster-Carr here in the US. Google “felt cord” to find a source in the UK. You will get enough for about a thousand oilers!

I've used a oiler felt that I found in my "stock" of bits which whilst circular in nature I cut, formed and fitted. Must admit that to have to replace the whole brass component would have been a bit costly!!

Good find Lonnie, I guess I have to figure out the diameter of the brass bit and order some soon.

Every winter I remove the lubricator, up end it and fill it with oil. A few days later I put a squirt on the hole on the back of the generator and reinstall. Mine has a square piece of felt in there right now.

I see a 5’ minimum, probably enough for all the Ts in NY.

Peter, you might already know this, but the felt is slightly larger than the diameter of the spring, not the outer casing. Also, there is no seal on the internal side of the bushing, if you squirt a lot of oil on the bushing, it will leak into the generator and eventually make a mess. PJ

I put in one squirt in each winter, a very tiny squirt at that.

When I had Ford Cortinas with generators there was a hole on the rear housing where the Bush went, we used to squirt a little oil in there.

So, the felt should be a loose fit, or firm.?

Thanks,

I saw the price of a new unit, oiler and felt combined and came to the same conclusion. Mad.

I made my own felt replacement using the pad from a dremel tool.

It is quite tough since it is designed to stand up to high speed polishing. I tested it before hand and it wicks oil/grease well.
