MG TD TF 1500 - Early Td firewall hole locations

Hi all. I have an early TD and I'd like to see if anyone else has an early one that I can compare with regarding firewall holes. I have some discrepancies with the diagram on this website for TD's and with the diagram provided in the T Series Restoration Guide by Malcom Green.

Namely, I do not have any large hole for the temperature gauge tube or holes for the fusebox under the voltage regulator position. Secondly, the lower firewall panel there doesn't seem to be any documentation on, and I have several holes in there that I'd like to account for.

Thanks in advance. I can provide pictures if needed.

I want to update. I solved the one mystery of no large hole for the water temperature gauge tube. I do not believe this car was equipped with the optional combined oil pressure/water temp gauge, as I only have an oil pressure gauge that came with this car, so I don't believe it had a water temp gauge at all.

Would still like to compare with another early TD for the other discrepancies yet to be solved. Thanks.

'Early' is a tough word. We could help better if we knew your Car No. Bud (TD 10855)

Hi Bud, TD 2670 is the chassis number.

Should be the same except temp gauge and dip switch. George

As George states plus you don't have the separate fuse block.

Can you attach a picture of your "lower firewall panel" and mark those holes you are in doubt about?

This is TD 1250 which did not have a temp gauge originally. In the first photo you can see the hole I drilled for the temp gauge line. I used photos from other cars to determine where the hole was to be located. On the other side of the bulkhead are two holes that I can only guess their purpose. I have my suspicions but for now they have been filled with some small rubber plugs.

I've always found those holes to be empty on TDs. For some reason I put my ground wire on the lower one, rather than the horn bracket.

I have seen at least once a MkII with a double fuel line hold down on one of the holes, but I am not sure if that was original or not.

Here is TD 4139. It has an added temperature gauge. The tube runs through the oil line/tach cable hole hole behind the battery.

You have to run the temperature tube through the hole first.

FWIW I updated the fw diagram to call out the changes for some of the holes.

Bruce,

Thanks for the pictures. If I do an added temp gauge, I'll route it similarly. Also, your picture shows one of the holes on the vertical sheet metal forming the battery cavity being used for the oil gauge pipe fitting. Given my lack of provision for that on the flat firewall face, I'll use the same spot.

Christopher,

Thanks for the that info and the update. I wasn't aware that fuse block was not standard across all TD's so that helps. My only discrepancy now on the updated diagram is that I lack a hole for the harness ground underneath the coil location. Perhaps it shares the same hole as the tach cable bracket spot?

I have attached two addtional pictures. One is of the firewall on the driver side (two holes) that I have no idea what they were for. It does not match the description for an added dip switch with 3 holes.

The second picture is the "lower firewall" or whatever you want to call it. It has several holes at the top which I've circled. I do not have any documentation on what they were used for, or if they're even supposed to exist.

B Darsch

In the top picture those two holes circled should not be there. Fill them.

On the second picture. All those holes are good. You will find a purpose for all of them in your travels.

Make sure you study these photos in detail. You will find your answers to what goes in all those holes. :-)

Hello,
In your second photo the foot plate upper mount bolts to these two holes.
The throttle goes thru the larger hole and the 2 holes right beside it is for the throttle shaft mount.
The 2 above Im not sur of.

W K: You're supposed to make him work for it. :-)

Those two small holes are for LTD studs that hold a piece of carpet over the trans tunnel.
Christopher Couper

Thanks for the helpful answers and link to the galleries, I will be sure to review them thoroughly
B Darsch

The toe board pic (black part ) as stated are for the throttle peddle. The two additional holes above them are for machine screw LTD fasteners to hold the carpet panel over the trans tunnel cover

Separate fuse block came into production with the dynamo regulator change just prior to TD/c-8151

No hole for a temp gauge original to your car. Your car didn’t have one.
