MG TD TF 1500 - Elmoto pliers Made in England

Speaking of original tools, again, is anyone familiar with the 'Elmoto' pliers ? I bought a pair this Spring at a swap meet just as a spare. Are they just reproduction, meant to fill the tool roll? Thx Curt

King Dick and Shelley are generally recognised as being the plier suppliers. The vintage Elmoto shares the same outline and polished flat surfaces and would do if KD and Shelley were unavailable imho.

Thanks Matt, I should have known you would have that answer (grin). Dave, I'll get a picture for you hopefully in the next couple of day. Never gave that a thought, sorry. Curt

Very interesting. I own my father's TF 1500 and there is a pair of these 6" Elmoto pliers in the 'original' tool roll. I have often wondered about them and always thought 'King Dick' were the only tools that were part of the roll. The TF is 9/1954 manufactured and to the best of my knowledge this tool roll has always been in the tool box. I have also noticed, per another thread, some of the tube spanners were not all marked 'King Dick' and I have one of those also. FOG

Elmoto pliers were typically used in the old jaguar toolkits (50s, 60s)

FOG, please share pictures of your roll, tools, grease gun, jack and tyre pump. Our collective knowledge is built up partly from surviving examples. I cant rule out an Elmoto being used during a supply shortage.

Matthew, OK I would be happy to do that but it will be a couple of weeks as the cars are at my fathers estate about 200 miles north. I also have a 1946 TC (also my fathers car) second owner in 1949-50 and have a tool roll I believe is original to that car as well. There are no tire pumps with either car and I don't remember ever seeing one. Were pumps standard or optional? I'll take lots of detailed photos and different views, didn't know there was that much interest. Mike Fritsch's note said Elmoto were used on Jag's during that time period so maybe they could have been supplied with the TF as standard. I can't swear to that but it is with that roll. FOG

A couple Pics....

Mike Brand, thanks for the pic. Were these issued to your TF roll also? Mine as I recall, are also stamped on that angle. FOG

Thank you FOG. Will look forwards to the pics. My email is mbmagilton AT msn DOT com if you want to discuss them offline. I am fortunate to have my original TF kit. Yes, tyre pumps were standard issue. They show in pictures in the TC Service Parts List and Instruction Manual.

Matthew, thanks. I just spoke with my mother (82 yrs young) to ask if by chance she ever remembers a tire pump ! She replied 'OH yes, your father came in the house one Spring morning cursing and swearing up and down. He was holding a pump in one hand and a broken hose in the other. 'I've never used this %@(&*%#@& thing and when I really need it it breaks'. That was the first and last time she recalls seeing the pump. I'll make it my quest to look in the rafters and behind the work benches but I'm not optimistic I'll find anything. FOG

For what it's worth, just looked at the original took kit in my 1965 Jaguar 3.8S and the black flat surface pliers with a wire cutting feature is labeled Sheffield England.

I've posted this pic before that I took of an original TF tool kit (TF 6213 Dec 1954) in the hands of the original owner, & it shows one of the two brands of tyre pumps used on the TF. Sutty & Shelley. This is a Sutty. I do have other unbranded pumps of approximately the same size which may also have been used. The canvas roll is not original. Everything else is. Cheers

Thanks very much Peter. I think I have seen this photo just recently somewhere else but couldn't find it. Who is the maker of these pliers, KD ? FOG
FOG Frank

Probably FOG. The car has just recently gone to its second owner & I don't have a closeup of the pliers. If you email me at pjbm at bigpond dot com I'll send you a copy of an illustrated T Type tool document that I'm compiling which, though still a work in progress, should answer most questions on the original tools. Cheers
