MG TD TF 1500 - Engine Control Link - Nuts & Color?

A) Where can I get a left-hand 5/16" thin jam nut for the engine control link on my TF?

B) What is the original color of each of the items in the diagram including brackets #8 and #12. (excluding the rubber bush #11)

C) Was the hex turnbuckle natural or painted? What color?

Thanks,

Lonnie

I think I am seeing mostly black, possibly cad plated for the big nut. Chassis black for #12. #8 likely to be engine red.

Matthew is correct as best as I can tell. The big "nut" as he calls it MIGHT have been CAD on some cars.

I think it was black but ...

TF9052 appears to have the big nut and it's lock nuts CAD but the water pipe right above that location is also void of paint so it could have been stripped of paint by antifreeze.

There is a BHMT picture of TD chassis with it and all the other nuts cad, but so are a lot of nuts and bolts in the image. It's just a chassis and either a demo or pre production so my hand painter guy did not get a chance to do his work.

So basically do what you want here and it can be a nice talking point when you show your car and some purist wants to challenge you. :-)

Thanks guys.

As you get older (real older in my case), the memory is the second thing to go. I searched and found that I posted a similar question on the BBS on May 8 of this year. Same answers.
Thread: "TF Engine Stablilizer Paint Color?"

Chris - I should have read the paint details on your site. FYI - I also have pages 7&8 of a type written document by you from 1978 that also defines the colors.

I'm torn between red and black for the small bracket.

Hope to have them painted this week. Engine may arrive from the builder soon.

>> Back to Question #A:
Do you know where I can find a left hand 5/16" BSF thin jam nut for the link? I see it in a photo of the engine before I removed the link. I must have dropped it when I disassembled it. Lost on the floor or worse, sucked up in the shop vac.

Thanks for your help,

Ok, I am going to throw my two cents in.

The factory picture of the chassis shows this when you blow up the picture. It shows the stabilizer in either cad or raw steel.

BUT. Not the nut is also not painted. I have looked closely at a lot of factory pictures and Chris and I have somewhat of a joking comment that MG must have had on person that went around and painted all the nuts.

The factory pictures are clear that when the chassis is being assembled the nuts are raw, but when the car is finished, the nuts are painted.

This appears to happen just before or just after the body is attached. (probably before).

So, while this picture shows the stabilizer unpainted, it is totally possible it was painted black when the nuts are painted.

I've been down this road before. Logic suggests it was cad not raw steel, simply to prevent the item from rusting prior to installation. As it needed to be adjusted once the engine was in the chassis, it wouldn't or shouldn't have been painted prior to this. What happened after adjustment is anybody's guess. It could have been left raw cad, it may have been painted engine colour or it may have been painted black. I doubt we'll ever know. I'm leaving mine cad in case I do need to adjust it, as tightening or loosening the nuts would just strip the paint from the threads. Not a good look. Cheers

Hi Lonnie, I likely have the nut you need. Will look in the attic junk. May be Sunday before I have time. George

Mine is Zinc plated, bracket black. PJ

Paul,

My original plan was to make my car look as good as yours. But I'm trying to get my three-year effort back on track. So I'm not going to plate anything - just paint to avoid rust.
