MG TD TF 1500 - Engine ID Plate

A bit of background. I was always of the opinion I had an XPAG in the TF but discovered when I checked the numbers on the engine that it was in fact a Gold Seal replacement XPEG. Happy Days!

Today we decided as part of the engine rebuild to take off the made up engine ID plate. This looked like it was some sort of ameature job with the original engine number stamped onto it.

See pic

Apolagies for it being upside down.....

....the surprise was what was on the rear.

D Lamb

When we turned it over this is what we found...

D Lamb

I am assuming someone just grabbed whatever was to hand stamped it on the rear to match the original engine and rivited it to the engine.

So now I am wondering what sort of stamp a gold seal replacement engine would have had originally or was this it.
Can I get a proper replacement engine ID and stamp it. I can't even find a pic of this...if any one had a pic I would appreciate a copy.

Any thoughts on this little mystery

Thanks Darryl

Darryl, do you know what the casting number is of your block? It might provide a clue.

Darryl - Go to the Y Type Register @ http://www.mgccyregister.co.uk/contact-legal/ and contact Neil Cairn. Ask him if he still copies of his booklet ENGINES for M.G's Neil has extensive information on the XPAG through the BMC 'B' Series. It has a lot of information that will help you determine what engine you have (It may well be a XPAW that someone put into your TD and flipped the tag over and put the current number on it. You might also clean and wire brush the crank case just above and below the tag. The engine # should be stamped right above where the tag is riveted on.

These are the stampings on the engine that helped me to determine it was in fact and XPEG....am I wrong?

Head AEF118 - 1500
Block AEF117 - 1500

D. Lamb,

The original TF1500 engine had the letters/numbers AEF 118 STAMPED on the right hand, top front area of the Cylinder Head. Also the letters/numbers AEG 117 were CAST into the Block on the left hand side as depicted.

The authors of some publications on the XPAG/XPEG engines often
erroneously state that the TF 1250 Cylinder Head had the the numbers
168422 cast in to the Cylinder Head. This is incorrect. The original TF1250 had the numbers 16842 CAST into the Head and the last digit
5 STAMPED into the Head to give 168425. The '5' indicated the enlarged valve head size.

Wolseley 4/44s and I suspect later TDs had the numbers 168422 in fact CAST into the head.

Of course, over the years many of the original engines and/or parts thereof have been ''chopped and changed' thereby adding to myth and confusion !

D. Lamb,

Please note my correction of the above for the letters/numbers signifying the TF1500 Block,it should have read AEF 117. A typo !

Thanks Rob...so since my replacement engine has on the Head AEF118 and on the
Block AEF117 I take it this means it's an original XPEG 1500 engine.
Do you have any idea what badge was attached to the engine and can these still be bought.
D Lamb

Darryl,

The original TF1500 brass Engine badge is the same form as the
TF 1250 except it has XPEG stamped into the small central circle piece compared to the 1250 which of course has XPAG. Both badges have the brass octagonal shaped base with the engine no. stamped in
with the 'MG Car Co Limited' pressed in.

Darryl,

Additionally, it looks to me like you have a TF1500 rare engine. The
'blank' badges may be available from Brown and Gammons(UK) or
Abingdon Spares (USA) ?

Did you clean off the paint on the upper part of the plinth to see if there is an engine number stamped there? There often is.

Darryl,

Attached is a photo of what you are looking for.

I should also have mentioned that if you look very carefully (at least on the original of the photo) you can see the engine number 3739 stamped into the block just above the octagonal plate.

Michael

the engine change may have put it into a higher Tax/Insurance bracket so the plate was fitted to get round this. It would not be the first time.

Guys this is great. Thanks for all the input.
Michael thanks for the picture...now I know what I am looking for.
Thanks G Evans for the link. I will let you know how I get on.

Think it's going to be near impossible to get the XPEG engine ID..
No luck with Brown and Gammons
Moss don't have the correct one on the website. Waiting to hear back from them.
Your link Michael has a blank ID but I would like to get my hands on the correct XPEG one.
D Lamb

Try From the Frame Up, I got a new ID plate for the car there, including the stamping.
