MG TD TF 1500 - Engine identification
Recently I borrow an Engine for my MG-TD as a spare part just in case. The engine looks pretty well and compression on all cylinders are good and equal. On the first glance it looks like my other engine which is installed on my ’53 TD. The seller told me that the engine was rebuild and the famous MOSS crank shaft sealing system was installed. I never opened the Engine, therefore I cannot check if it is tough or not. Anyway, The engine looks exactly as an XPAG, except in some details: 1. There is no ID tag on the engine. Even the casted platform where the Tag is typically installed is not there. 2. There is a casted number 3 03 in the area of the dip stick 3. The water drain tap, which is typical installed in the front of the engine is here installed in the middle. 4. There is a number Stamped into the casting underneath the tapped cover R/D/B/9/68 Can somebody tell me somthing about this type of Engine? Thank you Guenter ![]() |

Guenter- There are a tremendous number of variations of the XPAG engines through the years. One instance is the Morris 10/4 engine. If you can get hold of Neil Cairns booklet, Engines for MGs Their Story after 1935 it has all the information you would need to find out what variation of the XPAG engine you have. Neil Cairns can be contacted through the MG Car Club Y Type Register at: http://www.mgccyregister.com/ Click on Y-Type Forums and click on contact Neil Cairns our Technical Adviser. Cheers - Dave |

Is there a number plate or hole for it on the left side of the curve of the bell-housing? TC blocks had the drain in the center, but Dave is right - it could be from a number of cars... Tom Lange MGT Repair |
