MG TD TF 1500 - engine issue

I was driving my TD today which has a fully rebuilt motor with about 600 miles on it oil pressure has always been great(45-55)psi, water temp. was good 85C.
Heard a short squealing noise, not belt type noise, then engine stopped. tried re-starting and engine would barely turn not even a full revolution. got a tow home, removed belt and spark plugs will turn over but very slowly. Not fast enough to register oil pressure. Where do I start ? Pull oil pump cover, timing chain cover, pan?

Sorry to hear that Ben.Blood sweat and tears go into a rebuild and now you get to worry and wonder ( been there )In loo of any other evidence or info , I would pull the head. Only other thing I could think would be the flywheel/clutch but there would likely be other symptoms.
Fingers crossed for you anyway!

Unfortunately, I think you will need to pull the sump to evaluate what is tight. You will also need to take the valve cover off to look there. A tight valve seat is possible, but I suspect from the noise, it is a bearing.

Use the hand crank to try and figure out where the noise and binding is coming from.

My starter jammed the ring gear. Apparently it is a known issue, but was not known to me. A simple fix, but very scary. Maybe you'll get lucky.

I was traveling at a steady 30mph when things stopped. If it is a cracked crank how much damage can I expect? If it is binding of the oil pump and cam what can I do. My machinist was the one that discovered the bad batch of crane wide lobe cams, with miss cut gears, several years ago. I posted about that issue at that time. So I don't think that is the problem. We also checked and dye tested the crank. Don't think it is clutch, throw out bearing, pressure plate , all is new
and car rolls freely. Will do more investigating this weekend.

If caught quickly a broken crank doesn't necessarily cause any further damage; it's just an expensive repair. There are a great many things that could cause your problem, almost all requiring disassembly of the engine...

Were new pistons used by any chance? My cracked crank knocked, and oil pressure plunged. It still ran fine! George

Tom, I can vouch for what a broken crank can do. broke mine going about 65. drove it a mile, shut it off and then it would not turn over. only thing damaged was the crank. took a year to get a Moldex crank, by then I put in Crower rods and Venolia pistons and was back in business, expensive but worth every nickel.

Sounds like a bearing shell to me. However difficult to say with any certainty. Sump off rocker cover and then with an assistant turn by hand. There is normal although minute movement can be found. Would be surprised if a broken crank hope a simple solve for you.
