MG TD TF 1500 - Engine number location
I own a 1952 left hand drive MG TD. The car was originally constructed for the US market. I purchased the car in the US in 1993, shipped it to Turkey ( my domicile) and have owned it since that time. I have a couple of queries:
i) the local authorities have asked to see the engine number of the car, and i have not been able to locate this number. Is the number embossed on the engine body or the id riveted to the body ( and hence might have been lost sometime/somewhere). Where do i need to look ? ii) is the any official record where i can check to verify that the body and the engine numbers corroborate the originality of the manufacture. ie. the car engine has not been changed/replaced prior to my purchase. I would greatly appreciate a response, or, failing which, your advice on where i can get the answers to my queries. Thank you in advance Ali Ayanlar |

There is a brass tag attached to the engine on the right hand side below the front carburetor. This tag should have the engine number stamped on it. If the engine is original that number will match the number stamped in the second line of the manufacturers plate found on the bulkhead to the left of the toolbox. This plate also has the car serial number. There is also a body number stamped on the front left hand frame member. Jim |

Ali, check this site with your Chassis number. http://www.tregister.org/search_prod.php You should find the number stamped on the left front of the frame (dumb iron). This is more likely to be accurate than a chassis plate that could have been changed. Tim TD26711 ![]() |

This is the brass plate on the front of the tool box. Note the engine number. Referring back to the octagon brass plate on the engine, sometimes the number stamped just above is not visible due to paint. Roy ![]() |

Also be aware that while the T register search is great, the last digit of many engine numbers is missing due to some error when they were manually entered. |

And a final note. It was mentioned above that the body # is found on the front dumb iron. It is not. The Chassis No. as found on line one of the nickel Plated /brass ID plate corresponds to the dumb iron.
The body # however is on a smaller rectangular tag left of the tool box as well. This number only correspends to the tub itself and likely used for inventory control by the builder. It corresponds to a stamped number on the underside of the left main rocker timber below the door. This number has no legal registration reference. But if you can actually make out the stamping on a solid timber it’ll tell you that the tub is original to the tag and nothing more. Are you confused yet? Bill Chasser TD-4834 |

Another small point - the Guarantee plate illustrated by Ray above is not a factory correct plate, and is a re-stamped reproduction. Do not use it as a guide to the proper look or stamp font. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Ali, if you want to tell us what you can see we may be able to help fill in the missing numbers. Cheers, Matthew. |

Ali, One more pic of where to find the chassis number: Far left on the photo under the red paint.. can you make out TD 12495? I only found this myself recently after giving it all a thorough clean. Doug ![]() |

At TD/2985 the engine number plate moved from the bell housing to the offside front of the cylinder block, onto a ready cast in raised portion. ![]() |
