MG TD TF 1500 - Engine Rebuild
My engine is at the machine shop. Just had it bored from .040" to .060". AFTER machining and BEFORE honing there is still an un-machined shadow at the top of #4 cylinder. It looks to be about .003" deep but hard to measure. We are going to hone that cylinder and see what it looks like. I may have to make a decision to leave it at .060" or go up another size. As it is now the top ring would enter the shadow area at the turn around point. Not good. We'll see what happens after honing. Question #1 Are piston readily available at .080"? Question #2 Since my little engine is supercharged I believe a cast piston would be best and perhaps a coated top. Can anyone suggest some sources for this piston in .060" and/or .080"? I love this BBS, Mort two posts ![]() |

Mort Pistons can be had through any piston manufacturer and can be spec'd to suit. If you could get away with .070 why not have Pistons made to that spec. It might save you sleeving it at the next overhaul if you think you'll have it that long. Contact JE or Arias Pistons come to mind. They can give you any ratio or size you desire |

Mort, I wouldn't worry about going to .080" over. It would save you the cost of ordering odd sizes. Moss has .080 but not .070. I have the same type block and I just had it sonic tested. The engine builder says there is plenty of metal left to go to .120 over. I'm at .100 over now. Tim TD12524 |

The area at the top of the cylinder is usually, (Almost always) OVERSIZE. Not under-size. Before boring, look into this a bit more. Jim B. |
