MG TD TF 1500 - Engine rebuild news 51TD
The machine shop says the crank is in perfect condition, with no discernable wear at all (less than 5/10,000") Camshaft OK as well. Pistons and cylinders good (already overbored +40). He still has to measure the tappet cylinders for wear, but he thinks I need a new set of bearings all round, standard size, and new cam bearings, and new followers, and I'm good to go! We also talked about lightening the flywheel, balancing, and maybe porting the head a bit... |

See the MG Special Tuning Manual for Factory recomended specfic head work to improve HP since you are going to do some work anyhow. Why not do it right as per the best information. Don H. TF 1500 Stage 3 tuned as per Factory Manual It works! |

I'll do that, Don! |

The best money spent IMHO is balancing of the engine. Anywhere you can control vibration... the better. ... CR |

I forgot to mention what my shop guy thinks caused the problem: a total occlusion in the water passages around cylinders 1&2. He thinks the engine just overheated, and luckily I was at very low speed and low rpms so it just died, rather than a spectacular meltdown with broken metal everywhere. The cam bearing damage was also perhaps due to the general overheating. The engine is now completely clean and all passages open... we hope to have her back in full health in a few weeks! |
