MG TD TF 1500 - Engine & Gearbox External Dimensions?

Would someone know the external dimensions for an XPAG? I'm looking for the length from fan to bell housing, the overall length from fan to end of gearbox and the maximum width of the engine. If this information is available somewhere on line please provide a link. Thank you. Lou

What exactly are you trying to do?

I'm trying to obtain the exterior dimensions of the engine and gearbox for a new project. At this point I'm not ready to discuss what the project is but will do so once I determine if it could be done. So, if you can help me with some dimensions I would deeply appreciate it. Plus with the requested information I will then be able to share what I'm thinking of. Thanks.

Hi Lou,

My road TC is 600 mm (just over 23.5")from front of fan to back of block / front of bell housing interface. (There is no spacer between fan and pulley on a TC.)

The measurement from that interface back to rear of gearbox drive flange depends on the XPAG model. TCs had a bigger, longer gearbox casing but no extension housing on the back. It is about 420mm (16.5") for a TC but guessing another 150mm (6") on a TD or TF. If you are trying to use a TD/TF gearbox but it is too long, you can eliminate the extension by using a Morris 10 main-shaft, rear plate and selector mechanism. You would also have to use the Morris (or modified) rear gearbox mounts. That would give a measurement of a bit less than 400mm (Probably about 15").

The overall width of an XPAG block is also 400mm (just short of 16"). That is across the rear flywheel housing and starter motor section. On the RHS, the carburettors add to the width but the amount depends on the carburettor size and air cleaner manifold set-up. That varies through the T series. On the LHS, the oil filter adds to the width but the amount depends on whether you refer to the early (TC) system or the later (TF) system. TCs also had a wider front engine mount plate than later models.

I have TC bits and a few Morris bits but no TD/TF extension housings. If you let me know what to include in width measurements, I can get the tape measure out and do some more measuring.

I love watching the American hot rod programmes on Discovery and Quest even though I have no idea what the difference is between a small block and a normal V8. What is interesting though is the hot rod builders have full size polystyrene models of engines and gear boxes which they can use when making up firewalls and engine mounts. Much easier to manoeuvre than the iron lumps.

Bob, your information is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you so much for your effort and details. Now that I have all the dimensions necessary I can continue with my plan. Shortly I'll start another message in which I will discuss what I'm most likely going to do with my TC. Yup, I know there's a TA,TB, TC group but this one get a hell of a lot more activity then the TC group. If possible I'll try and post the message on both groups. So stay tuned! Fun stuff!

L. stalker,

Gene, I'm aware of the TA TB TC group but this one gets quite a lot more traffic than then other one. I posted my question here because of that and I was told that all the T series engines are very much alike.
I received the info I was seeking and will end this thread. Thank you all.
