MG TD TF 1500 - exhaust flange gasket

First, many thanks to those who replied to my post yesterday regarding removing the manifold thanks to a broken exhaust stud on my 1950 TD. Got the manifold off and on the bench. Core plugs look good. My plan is to have NAPA replace all 3 of those Whitworth studs & nuts w/ standard studs & stainless steel nuts. Any pros/cons about that? I'll clean up everything nice & pretty & install new gaskets. Any other tips regarding re-assembly?

Bruce, Your manifold looks like many I have seen. First, it looks like there is still enough stud left to be able to remove it with the proper heat process.
What I have done on my cars is use an acetylene torch(medium small tip) to heat the old stud to cherry red and grab it with vice grips to twist it out. Don't over heat the manifold-- Just have who ever does it concentrate on the stud itself until it heats through out the length. Normally, this process will leave the threads in the cast iron manifold serviceable.
The standard stud on the TD is Metric 10-1.5 thread.
Moss sells them but they are not that common through NAPA. The nuts used are correctly brass.
I have not had much success finding suitable studs through any standard Auto Zone / NAPA type dealers so your on your own if you decide to go that way.

Bruce, there's another reason to stick with the OEM type of stud - why carry another wrench? You'll find that the nut on the non-OEM stud will be using a 13m wrench. That's now another one that you'll have to carry in your toolkit. Bud

If there is room, my preferred procedure is to weld a nut onto the remaining stud, and remove both at once after heating up the stud with the torch, as Rich quite rightly notes.

I have never been impressed with the quality of Moss studs, and have broken them just trying to install them. If you can't find that metric size locally I would get them from Abingdon Spares or Doug Pelton.

I have to agree with Tom,, This method was shown to me by our motor pool welder in the army to remove a broken stud on the Jeep I drove..It worked great!!

I have used a Dorman brand stud from a repair kit for some type of Chevy or Ford. I think the kit even comes with brass nuts. Be very careful if you drill/tap/thread, as I cracked a manifold years ago forcing a new stud into the hole. George
